When housing is wall to wall from one end to the other on every continent--( you know--the growth "they "are always pushing as good and necessary) the land unable to grow crops, the oceans chock full of plastic, the fish and wild animals are gone, the population reaches 50 to 100 million-----the billionaires have their enclaves with their goons protecting them---You also know--there's some bad shit comin' down. --OH ---WAIT---THE KIND OF WORLD I WANT---- hmmmm-------.Ok. Yeah---well-- peace , harmony and all that kind of stuff that humans seem incapable of visualizing or accomplishing.
I want the fucking jetpacks they've been promising since the 50s! Seriously, though, as princess peedge says, there are a great many unknowns attached to every choice. All those unintended consequences that may not show up for years. Remember DDT? Better living through chemistry! ...Oh, shit! Remember thalidomide? Yay! ...Oh shit! Etc., etc. Blindness to the downside (and EVERYthing has them) seems to be deeply baked right in to us. If I were in a position to actually effect change (maybe like the dude in Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven) I would just start small, "uninventing" one thing at a time, and seeing how that shakes out before uninventing another. Ultimately I'd like to get us back to pre nuclear-weapons and pre internal-combustion engines. Sure, we'd be living slower, quieter, more "primitive' lives, but that wouldn't be a bad thing. Maybe like a permanent, worldwide Rainbow Gathering!
