In Cambodia, there's a combined lake and river system called the Tonle Sap. It meets the Mekong in Phnom Penh and then flows out into the South China Sea. But that's only most of the year. It's the only major river in the world that does this I believe. Every year the Cambodians build boats and wait for the monsoon to celebrate the flowing back to the Tonle Sap with boat festival.
