i think that if i was that afraid of falling into a stereotype i would never have gotten dreads. as far as some people think, by having dreads i'm a pot-smoking, tie dye-wearing, dirty hippie deadhead. so let people think what they want, i'm not concerned about that kind of stuff
What exactly are you trying to say here? If stereotypes are not bad, that must make them acceptable or "good." Surely you do not believe this. Heh, given your username and the extent of your list- I assume you enjoy that stigma, deep down. Just my personal thought though. But anyway, you misunderstood. It isn't so much that you should be worried about what they think of you as an individual- its more about you being "part of the problem" feeding fuel to the fire of the negative stigma of dreads.
wow you got some hot locks over there man!! they look awesome!!! i would recomend some palmrolling if they where mine, but hey that's just my opinion! on the other hand do i love your messy-like locks!! they're more personal like that!
your hair rules seriously. Man these forums are going to shit, people trying to tell other people what to do because if they dont they will be a stereotype? wtf???? people telling them they arent dreads ???? wtf???? checkerboard head k thx.
People complaining? wtf??? This is a message board and it is ok for people to express different opinions and maybe even have an engaging debate over matters. Without it we just have a forum of replies that consist of- "I agree" "Looking good man" "Thanx"
he made this thread to show his hair, you dont need to tell him how he should or shouldnt look, thanks.
I was defending him from someone telling him how he should look, read the thread before you post, thanks.
that's dumb...if he likes it, he should wear it.Who cares. And i think he would look awesome with a little unshaved aspect, not really beard
Well first of all, he doesn't have a beard... Like I said, I'm defending his current appearence. As you can see- He didn't comment on how awesome his locks were, just this was his entire post.... Telling him to grow a beard. You all jump to attack me when really all I'm doing is defending his current appearance. He looks incredibly awesome and a beard would only hurt his appearance imo. So far everyone's argument against me has been "Who cares about anyone else, just do what you want." Such a self centered point of view isn't the best imo. We already have this negative stigma of being dirty for having dreadlocks, and sometimes having a beard reinforces that stigma. You may not care, but it harms the dreadlock community as a whole imo. Everything doesn't always have to be about "me, me, me" is the way I see it. Since Captain Cannabis made a comment about black folks, I'll use that as an example. If a black youth makes a living through crime, and does not attend school or work, he harms the black community as a whole- enforcing a negative stigma in society's mind. Now he could have the same point of view as "Who cares what they think, I do as I please!" But in the end he's just being selfish because what he does effects other black youth as well with matters such as employment. The same way the stigma of "dreadlocks=dirtyman" prevents me from working in a hospital (or makes it quite a bit more difficult). Perhaps if we were rid of this stigma (And the only people who can do this are people with dreadlocks) then maybe we would not be looked down apon in society. I personally think that a part of the problem is a number of people w/ dreads enjoy the negative stigma and it makes them feel special and unique... So they follow what society expects of them like good little sheep (Ex, I have dreads so I'll smoke "x", grow a beard, and do as many stereotypical hippie things as I can." I'm not saying all do this, but a select few make it difficult for the others. Anyway, sorry for the long post, but it was nice to share my point of view. I know everyone disagrees but at least I said my peace. That being said, I'm sorry if I offended anyone or came off as rude. Looking back through the thread, maybe I was a bit mean. Take care, friends.
I think your dreads look great! Ignore the haters but remember that is their job! God forbid they lose that job cause then they'll be into all kinds of mischief..
damn i have a beard..and have dreads in my beard...have i completely destroyed the hopes n dreams of an entire community? would the community exost today without all those who paved the way. wether they smoked all day prayed or meditated they chose an alternate way to spend the day besides the 9-5 grind and the omportance of looking proffessional; and dospelling stereoptypes didnt matter as much as living according to what they felt right, not societies ideas of right and wrong but theyre own personal choices beard or no beardshouldnt matter to anyone but him..
....Joke post? Maybe if you deny the truth and wish real hard it'll just go away somehow. Maybe the community wouldn't be in it's current negative state if that damage hadn't been done. People are shoehorned into following a particular path if they have dreadlocks. Society has certain expectations of us because of our dreadlocks, why do the majority of us comform to their expectations? In following this expectation of us, we are no different from the "nine-to-five" professional appearance types that we deem as conformists. If what someone deems as right is the cookie cutter stereotype of a person w/ dreadlocks, then I'd argue society has influenced his opinion a great deal.... Similar to the average joe conformists, ironically.
That's your counter argument? You disappoint and amuse me at the same time. I give it a 5.5 out of 10.
