I never met Wallace, and if there's something positive that can be said for him, I haven't heard it yet. If Reagan wanted out of Vietnam, that's news to me. That's not the way he came across in the press at the time. He also personified repression of hippies. I can't think of many hippies or anti-war people with Reagan posters on the wall of their bedroom or jail cell. I know I didn't have his poster on the wall of my cell when I was imprisoned for refusing U.S. military service in 1971. Reagan coined the term "no more Wheeler ranches" following the destruction of that commune, and was also quoted as saying "Let's clean up the logjam on death row." A typical Republican, in other words. Reagan continued the American tradition of meddling in central America when he was elected President, and ranked right up there with Brezhnev when it came to passing IQ tests. Next to Reagan, Nixon comes across as a brilliant intellectual.
Wallace, later in his life, underwent a 180 degree turn. He saw the error of his ways, and by the time he finally left public service, he actually had a great deal of black support behind him. x
I'm impressed that you sucessfully dodged the draft but what a drag that you had to go in the clinker for that. Yes you're right that Reagan hated the Hippies cos of their long-hair etc. I saw Reagan's call in 1967 to withdraw from Vietnam on a t.v. documentary.I was surprised by this too as I thought he epitomised the Neo-Fascist Right Wing in America as much as Nixon. Reagan only needed to reherse his lines properly- Dubya can't even do that. Only McGovern & Bobby Kennedy were for immediate withdrawal.
Yes,he sort of repented. The nut that shot him: Arthur Bremer is actually due to be released from Prison in December 2007.He was only 21 when he shot Governor Wallace 5 times in 1972.He is now 57 so he has spent practically all his prime adult life behind bars.Apparently he's out on good behaviour!!?.
The Vietnam War gets my vote. I remember going with my mom to the post office and standing in line to send my brother packages from home. I also remember her listening to the radio and crying when they announced the name of the soldiers who were killed as she knew a lot of them when they were kids and would eat at our house, all the while praying to God she wouldn't here my brother's name. The '67 Ice Bowl was one of the good things that happened in the 60's.
That's really moving.Because of the draft,so many families were affected.I hope your Brother made it home safely!.
'bad' is one of those terms who'se meaning has chainged more then once in my own lifetime. when i was born it ment crap. then campiness came along and it came to mean "so bad it was good". but that too seems to have past, so that now it has become so ambiguous that it's beyond me to entirely comprehend what is being asked. =^^= .../\...
yes, you should have because the russians were the ones to blink. if they did not have that moment of hesitation, none of us probably would have been around to answer this poll.
all of them were horrific events, with the exception of the football reference. I do not see how a football game has any consequence considering the radical changes which was occuring in america at the time. all of them had a major impact on the course of this nation. the above referenced events impacted racial relations, relations between youth and the establishment, relationships between those leading alternative lifestyles and the statis quo.
What's bad has been known and shown. What's good about the 60s is that many, many of us were shown to what lengths conservatives will go to maintain power,ie:the Kennedy murders, mlk murder and the rise of the present republican party that has done all the things that those of us that pay attention know they have done and will continue to do if not stopped. Now we (should!) know who they are and what they have done .Can people still be fooled concerning what Republicans are about?------------The 60s were extremely exciting--never a dull moment.
I agree with you that the neo-fascist & ultra-conservative administrations of today almost began their current reign with Kennedy's assassination & have been in power continuously since then with the exceptions of Ford,Carter & Clinton. By the way-thankyou for your kind comments on my videos.
Absolutely. My reference to the NFL Green Bay Packers vs Dallas Cowboys 'Ice Bowl' on new year's eve 1967 was not intended to be taken seriously, although football fans may vote for it if saw footage of how awful it was!.
I find the "worst" scene of the 60's to have been the slow erosion of what I'll call idealism, or an actual belief that right could and would eventually prevail in AmeriKKKa....... To those old enough to have lived then; the constant onslaught of govermenmental lies and manipulation truly did lead to the "death of the AmeriKKKan Dream"......
Squid, did it seem that this malaise began on November 22, 1963? My recolection is that the "the future is going to suck" accelerated one year after the summer of love. Bobbie's death pretty much finalized that attitude.
The Vietnam War because it affected many lives and countries. It's my choice because many people were drafted and many died. JFK's assassination was a close second.
The drug scene, I think that drugs are safe, when used in moderation, but read Go Ask Alice and tell me drugs are harmless. It is set in the late 60s-early 70s, and it is one of the saddest, most numbing books I've ever read.
The Vietnam War, not only did we lose loads of money and american lives we lost the war. Also millions died in that war.
Obviously wasn't there, but I'd say the civil rights murders / MLK assassination & Vietnam, in no particular order. Those seem to be the events that have had the most direct impact on people over the decades -- lives lost, families destroyed, racist political agendas cemented, etc.
