You can break through by meditation. I know too many people who have broke through, to say you can't. Meditation is the way. Meditation is sort of like water, you get it hotter and hotter and hotter, and it barley looks like its doing something, then you get it to 100 degrees, and all of sudden it starts boiling very rapidly. I can feel the build, I've gotten the same head space from mediation as acid, the same connected feeling, even get inner visuals sometimes, but they are just not as intense and overpowering as acid. I know that on acid, if you meditate and say a mantra, your thoughts will stop almost instantly. All you have to do is close your eyes and aum, and instantly your thoughts stop, and the transcendence happens. This is what supposed to happen normally, but it is a whole lot harder to stop your thoughts normally. It takes about 30 minutes of total silence to get anywhere close to that. But then again I've only been doing it for 3 years. I just talked to someone who has been doing it for 25 years, and he says he transcends every time. Like I said, it is my feeling that meditation has infinite potential if used correctly. How bout this though, "LSD without meditation is blind, Meditation without LSD is boring"
You are missing a very important difference between the two experiences though. Meditative states are mitigated by the control of autonomic bodily functions and and often results in a difference in brain wave activity. LSD induced states are the result of bio-chemical actions. Yes I know the two, brain wave activity and bio-chemical activity are intermingled, but the resulting states of awareness are uniquely different in many aspects that can be narrowed down to the difference in how the states are achieved. I personally feel that the elusive "peak experience" on psychedelics is the result of a convergence of bio-chemical influence and the "alignment" of brain wave activity as can be achieved through meditation. I believe this is the state that Shulgin is referring to below; "PLUS FOUR (++++) A rare and precious transcendental state, which has been called a 'peak experience', a 'religious experience,' 'divine transformation,' a 'state of Samadhi' and many other names in other cultures. It is not connected to the +1, +2, and +3 of the measuring of a drug's intensity. It is a state of bliss, a participation mystique, a connectedness with both the interior and exterior universes, which has come about after the ingestion of a psychedelic drug, but which is not necessarily repeatable with a subsequent ingestion of that same drug. If a drug (or technique or process) were ever to be discovered which would consistently produce a plus four experience in all human beings, it is conceivable that it would signal the ultimate evolution, and perhaps the end of, the human experiment. " Keep in mind the differences in mode of awareness change when making comparisons between psychedelics and meditative practices.
Meditation, why not? The thing is, no-one has ever 'broken through' by any means. We always come back, or are left clinically insane. It turns out we actually need oneanother. This is why I propose that the world should have a massive mushroom party. lol
