I experienced homelessness in my youth and in my adult life. That is America for you.

Either conform to their ideal of corporatism and earn your way through life or be homeless.

I grew up poor and was homeless for a time. It wasn't easy but it taught me a lot. It made me think about the system, what my role may be, etc. I came to the conclusion early into adulthood, that if I didn't want to play the game with corporations and I didn't want someone to always take a cut of the true value of my effort and...I didn't want to be poor or even homeless....I would have to figure out how to cut out the middle men. Profit is nothing more than one person taking part of the value of someone else's efforts. Interestingly enough, I make money from other peoples efforts today but at least it's not the other way around and I'm a pretty decent person to work for. It's the least I can do. If you work on a crew in this area and you don't work for me...you probably wish you worked for me. I am very strict on safety but very lax on time off for almost any reason as long as I know in advance. If you work 6 hrs because it rained, there is a good chance you're going to be paid for a full day anyway. If a holiday falls on a Thursday and we decide to take the following Friday off...you're probably getting paid for both days without making up any hours for it. Being poor taught me that, while throwing a few hours on someone's check may not be a huge deal to me.....it might be a very big deal for them and if I'm going to participate in capitalism...I at least what my people to know I give a shit about them. I appreciate what they do.

Tangent....that reminds me of back in the day when we were bigger....this happened a few times....someone would ask me "Are you aware that <insert name> is going to be gone for 2 weeks next month to go follow the Grateful Dead around?" I would be like "Oh yeah...that's right. But we have it covered. Oh...I might have forgot to tell you....I'm going to be gone for those same days. We're riding together."

Totally an excused absence. How could you not love working here? :)
