How many of these flu deaths had absolutely no pre-existing conditions? How many over 50?

Can't possibly include them if you so easily remove those people from the covid deaths...

You do realize these are people, right? You toss numbers around like they are meaningless... Are people meaningless to you?

My empathy towards people and wanting to believe the garbage that masks, lockdowns or any other defense is going to protect us in the long run, are two completely different things

Does it matter? You can say 90% if you want to, 25,000 to 50,000 are flu only vs 100,000 that are Covid only

We are still only talking 2,3 times worse than the flu in its first year, and no one gave a shit about all those flu deaths before 2020

We aren't talking about 50 times worst than the flu

Hell we aren't even talking worse than the flu really, H1N1 was likey around for a couple years before 1918, but then 17 million dead when the world's population was 2 billion, 0.85% vs maybe 2 million Covid deaths in two years when the world's population is 7.8 billion, 0.025%

So we are talking about something 35 times less deadly than the worst time a new flu strain hit

    You don't believe the numbers.

Well, I'm starting to get the feeling that CoViD is under control, and it worries me a little. I'm in the habit of wearing my mask and gloves. I wash my hands when I touch anything. But somehow, it feels like I'm letting my guard down. I'm not bothered in the least by the lockdown if you can believe that. It's normal life now. I'm acclimated.

In a few days, more people in Trump’s orbit tested positive for coronavirus than in all of Taiwan

More than a dozen White House officials have recently tested positive for the novel coronavirus, including some who are among the at least nine guests and two journalists who tested positive after they attended Amy Coney Barrett’s Sept. 26 Supreme Court nomination event in the Rose Garden.

Trump announced his positive test early Friday, and was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center later that day. He returned Monday to the White House, where he removed his mask, despite doctors saying he was still contagious.

Meanwhile, Taiwan — the self-ruled island home to 23 million people — reported just eight new cases in the past week.

    Only took 11 months:

Covid can be airborne, US CDC guidelines now say

Coronavirus can be spread by tiny particles suspended in the air, sometimes for hours, says the US Centres for Disease Control.

Its updated guidance says this airborne route of transmission is still uncommon - bigger droplets from coughs, sneezes and talking are still the main source.

People are at higher risk of catching it the longer and closer they are to someone who has the virus.

Poorly ventilated enclosed crowded spaces are riskier than outdoors.

    Here we go again

Wisconsin activates field hospital amid COVID-19 surge

Wisconsin health officials will activate a field hospital located at the state's fairgrounds in order to help relieve the strain on medical facilities overwhelmed by a massive influx of COVID-19 patients.

Gov. Tony Evers (D) on Wednesday said the 530-bed facility at Wisconsin State Fair Park near Milwaukee will begin accepting coronavirus patients within the next week.

Evers said that hospitals across the state are worried about reaching capacity and the field site is opening at the request of hospital leaders.

  13. And how would it have all gone if no lockdowns, etc etc..

Just hearing the NPR news and the food lines from so many who have lost jobs....asking should they feed themselves or give themselves their meds? FRAUD!!!!!

This is the most misleading piece of information that I have seen so far.

This is the reason, figures taken from the UK

Every day, an average of 1,500 people die, many of them following a cancer.
However 95% of ALL deaths involve a virus taking over during the last 72 hours of life. This is what leads to the pathogenic bacterial attack that leads to septicemia, organ failure and death.

Since flue viruses are not notifiable, these people are correctly diagnosed as the cancer being recorded as their cause of death.

However, since covid is being recorded, most of these deaths are now logged as the virus rather than the underlying condition.

The media have constantly been made aware of this situation, but rather than producing figures, they are just saying "Many people who died had a pre-existent condition" and it is going right over the public's head.

Covid 19 is a nasty virus, so more people are needing medical attention than normal.
The entire problem is that if the health services become overwhelmed, people will die unnecessarily.

I have little doubt that governments are allowing these scaremongering figures to be published, in order to prevent people from ignoring social distancing.
At the moment, governments are acting in good faith, but hardly surprisingly they have very little understanding of the true medical situation.

Politically, I can see how not shaking the earth is attractive to some. To say that the figures are misleading isn't fully untrue; after all statistics can be presented in any number of ways to make the truth actually obscured or less clear.

    Let's look again:

It looks like one claim is that older people are more susceptible to death by both flu and CoViD-19. I think I agree with that.

It suggests as well that while .83%, yes <1% of people 65+ die from flu, while over 3% of people 65+ die from CoVid-19. That sounds serious as a heart attack!

But here's where I agree with you. We don't see any figures about flu in terms of brackets for those between 65 and, say, 100. I think there's a reason they aren't showing that. Perhaps that particular trend tapers off for flu such that there are actually more survivors in the 70-79 and 80+ ranges.

I think though that while this is open to scrutiny, the American CDC is not.

It mentions that mortality for CoViD-19 in range 70-79 is 8%, presumably more than flu, but still 8% is rather high regardless, isn't it?

For 80+, the mortality rate is undeniably close to 15%. 15%!

If you're saying that's also true of the flu, and I'd definitely entertain the possibility, please go on.

I think though you'll find that CoViD-19 is demonstrably more deadly; particularly in that age range.

I think the consensus is that the press has exaggerated the severity of CoViD-19 because they have harped on it, and not because it isn't true. The parameters of social distance are questionable - how many feet? 6. Well, why is that then... and that line of thinking provides for skepticism. The thinking of course being that 2 meters allows time for aerosol droplets in the air to dissipate and dissolve before someone walking 2 meters behind breathes them; particularly if wearing a mask.

Next, what about masks? How exact is the science on that btw? But isn't it common sense? :) My logic on that particular aspect is doctors and nurses wear them all the time so they don't infect their patients or vice versa. The vice versa has been questioned though; at times being compared to a chain-link fence to keep out mosquitos (a decidedly colorful comparison...), but the idea of wearing a mask contributes to a sense of safety, even if not proven 100% effective at preventing contagion. It makes sense that if you're sick, the mask might catch diseased spit, if not air... before it's breathed into the collective reserve.

So with these questions being asked, there's a bit of room to say "that's not scientific", ok. But to call it erroneous is a dire mistake.

Further, without such measures, what tangible evidence has anyone got that we're addressing the pandemic at all? Without social distancing and masks, one might feel as though people are running about unchecked infecting everyone in their path.

No, I think we've taken the correct steps and I'm interested to hear what you think should be different in our approach to containment.
