Online classes this week and next, then spring break. But yeah campus is closed down. Was supposed to perform at a club last night and that was cancelled. Whole city is a ghost town. Coronavirus hype is doing more to disrupt daily life than the actual virus is. CDC officially declared it a "pandemic" not sure what that means exactly

 

it means enough people have contracted the disease and the government might not be able to stop it

Tell that to all the assisted living facilities in Western Washington with employees who have tested positive, as well as all the highly at risk people living in them and people who love them. This is not a joke, and people with some degree of empathy are acting as if they care.

 

Are you suggesting that I don't have empathy and that I don't care because I pointed out the hype is over blown? As has been pointed out, more people die every day in the US in car accidents than all the coronavirus deaths in the US combined. Why aren't we terrified of traffic? Because a lack of media hype that's why.

 

One more time: People walking across the border from Mexico, Honduras, or Guatemala are not the ones infected with Coronavirus. People who fly to New York from Italy or Germany might have it. People from China who fly into Seattle might have it. But, the way I see it, the larger problem is mental illness among the Trump supporters.

Our Governor and health officials have repeatedly said we are looking foreword and trying to prevent a catastrophic event. If the WDOT suddenly said our state may have 10,000 traffic deaths in the next 6 mos. if we don’t take steps now, you had better believe there would be a similar reaction to the Covid19. Panic is certainly not appropriate in any situation, but we are watching the news closely so that we can make appropriate potentially life saving decisions. That is not hype. In WA the Governor’s decree effectively precludes concerts, sporting events, events attracting over 250 people and requires preventive measures for smaller events. As a retired economist I know this decision will have significant economic impacts on the metro Seattle area but it needs to be weighed against the very real potential for a catastrophic meltdown of our healthcare system.
Perhaps Governor Inslee should send Trump a fiddle, but he is probably too busy being an adult and dealing with the crisis.

Oh no we're not playing that game. Theres a reason I didn't run for president and it's not because I'd be amazing at the job

I understand all that. Please don't think I'm not empathetic. And maybe "hype" wasn't the right word. My point was doesn't matter if you get sick or not you're going to be affected by this. it's changing day to day life for everyone. I may not work until this blows over which means I won't have any money and I'll be screwed. My city is on lockdown. No one is leaving their homes. Had to cancel a planned trip to Japan, everything from graduation to work to meetings is all uncertain now. Life in general is uncertain now and I feel stuck in neutral at the moment. But I understand it is necessary. However, hoarding toilet paper and cleaning supplies and wearing paper masks as protection is hype (the CDC said this is pointless)

 

Schools have transitioned to online instruction. And the WHO has declared it a pandemic... just sayin'.
