If big business and the ultra rich pay their fair share … well … that would be easy.

 

The idea being that the most common idea amongst folks higher up in the hierarchy in corporations and government for that matter, which has never been proven by any academic work in economics of which I am aware, that business is best when the population is hungry or at least peckish and most importantly at one another's throats . . . my question on any health, education & welfare programme in the States or anywhere else for corporations, the ultra-rich and the rest of the Post-Modern Techno-Industrial Megastate is "how much skin off your arse is it really?" -- for example, how many times over could taking the age requirement off of Medicare be financed by bringing troops home and following George Washington's advice and so on. In the case of universal basic income, they woulld probably say that isn't the point it would be some complaining about what it would do to motivation and moral choices -- well, that certainly is legislating morality and when has that worked?

In any case, in lots of places they probably could guarantee full employment by using biweekly cash payments to just bribe the truly un-motivated to stay out of the way of everyone else, and probably be the least expensive way of doing that . . .

 

Under any method of attaining social justice and equality for all, I say we go after the rich and the corporations … make 'em pay for their crimes.

UBI is an insult to our intelligence as a human species. We are evolutionary survivors. We adapt to changes and transitions. We all have transferable skills that make us valuable in the job market. When Yang gives his argument about truck drivers needing UBI when automation takes over, I hear him dissing all these truckers as being too stupid and inept to utilize one of their many other skills, or learning a new one. He is a piece of shit masquerading as a common sense business democrat.

 

A lot of social programs could be paid for if we cut the defense budget by eighty percent.

Agreed, we don't need a massive military these days, we have beam weapons and nukes. Of course, we wouldn't need so many social programs if more people accepted responsibility for their own shit. Trump and his ignorant policies have destroyed thousands of farmers. Most liberals are Vegan and would not eat such animals. Now them Republican Trump worshipers would eat anything, even what is scraped off the shop floor.

 

Now you've gotta admit it is impossible for poor people to take responsibility for their own shit and pay for their own bills when employers who often tend to be Republicans refuse to pay them an adequate living wage. On ten bucks an hour, you have to make a choice between the doctor visit, or the rent, between enough food or the roof leak, and maybe between the car insurance or the brake job. Work is meaningless if you can't make ends meet.

So you think humans are adaptable yet you dont believe they would take advantage of the extra income to pursue education/training/a passion? I think the entire premise of the UBI relies on the adaptability of the human species

Side note, Yang of course isnt the first to think of a UBI. There have been experiments with it going back to the 60s
But as far as Yang's plan, he wants to give $1000 a month to everyone (over 18). As we all know, $1000 isnt really enough to live on anywhere in the US. But it is enough to provide a cushion and allow for some level of economic freedom to assist people in pursuing education, business start ups etc. Your premise that it would stifle the adaptability of humanity is flawed

But since you dont support a UBI, how do you think society should address the inevitable threat of automation and potentially high levels of unemployment it may cause?

Pizza delivery in the US is the most hazardous, normal job. Despite most delivery people never carrying weapons and carrying $20.oo in change with them, they are more likely to be shot than a fucking cop. How much people pay for their food and how long they have to wait for their food, appear to determine whether they are even viewed as human. I tell cops to get a real job.
