I think you have to have a need or desire to somehow tell people what you have observed that somehow by-passes other more busy people with common lives. That makes a good writer, and if perhaps he develops his talents and polishes the art of story-telling, then he has fulfilled his soul, and even perhaps in the process awakened a few souls, or at least stirred them slightly, to make changes. I mean what was the sixties? Many poets, musicians, orators, dropouts, and even preachers expressing with their own skills and talents, a united messages that the common people picked up quickly or slowly, and in turn began their own revolutionary thinking. Was it a desire to be published first then the talent? Could be, but I think that those who desire that with all their heart to be known and paid well, miss the point and have nothing to say, or repeat what others have said even poorly.
I think thats kind of true - a lot of musicians say that actually and will laugh at the idea of making music to become famous, But I always ask, well if youre not in this to make money, why do you want to become great at it and play in fromt of thousands of people? I forget who said it (could have been "captain sensible - from "the Damned") but he said "Anyone who is in music and doesnt want to make a fortune is an idiot" I guess thats true, but money will not happen unless talent is GREATLY in eveidence
There comes a time for anyone after they have been doing well, and see no signs of declining of their income -that money doesn't have to be a great struggle, and even fame becomes more of an inconvenience, that people (in that position) are at rest. They don't have to worry nor desire or struggle. Of course before you have it, it's the only thing that you can think of (fame and fortune) but if you've had it for a long time, then it is already won, and there is no more desire involved. It's like winning a mate, once you are together you dont' hanker like before, you just enjoy it, plainly. I feel sorry for those who had no real love of the craft, and get stuck with their millions, still having to make that gig, write that next book, finish that next film etc.
If a person is an artist and all that person can think about is fame and fortune, how much thought does it leave for art? We tend to confuse icons of the mass media with art. They are not the same thing.
Agreed. There's a pure love of the art, that some will probably never taste, if they can only see the business aspect of it .
http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3321297#post3321297 I'd like to move the story to the Times (The Nightly Times) and continue this thread for commentaries about the story, and writing itself. What do you think?
