Well around here there isn't much gang activity, save for some Sharpie graffiti on the side of the dollar store, so I don't think I'd be afraid to investigate a cry for help. If I heard a kid yelling for help, I'd go running, though. When I was about 10 years old we had a neighbor with a big rottweiler that always jumped the fence and my 6 year old brother and I were riding bikes and that rott started chasing us. We were terrified and were riding as fast as we could with this mean snarling dog bigger than us biting at our wheels, screaming our heads off. It wasn't until we got two blocks down the road when the head football coach came out and scared the dog off. To this day I'm still pissed at all those houses we passed with not one soul coming out to do anything. Could've been something much worse than a territorial dog and they would've had the blood of two small children on their fucking hands.

the fire alarm box is a city thing and in a city like SF that has burnt down a few times they are on every third or so corner. men on big red truck with loud sirens, fire axes, and water cannons...

I would probably be one of those nuts who just goes on in and then after gets the shakes knowing that it could have gone really bad.

Story of my life but I have been blessed in that it does not go bad. Maybe there is a reason for that.

I have been in situations that could have been not safe for me but something has always prevented misfortune from hitting me in the noggin.

then on the other hand - i've stepped over a drunk who i saw pass out in front of me on my way to work. he fell off the bench at the train station. not sorry i didn't stop...

We knew we'd be safe if we could just make it to Coach's house. His son was my brother's best friend for years and he loved us kids. I was praising every deity in existence when we finally got to his house. :)

it depends. If someone sounded like they were in genuine distress, I would definitely investigate. If it would put my life in danger to intervene I would just call the police, but otherwise I like to think I would help. Never really been in that situation.

I remember reading about a famous case in NYC in the 1960s where a woman was stabbed repeatedly outside of her building. She screamed for help and no one bothered to call the cops. The murderer actually left and came back 2 different times and no one bothered to check on her while he was gone. http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/predators/kitty_genovese/3.html

I always gone to see what the problem was then quickly assessed whether it was safe or not to help

    it usually was safe

there was one time though i walked away from a lady hanging upside down from her seatbelt in her car that was in the ditch..once i got a whiff of her alcohol breath i just left and let the others help

I'm pretty much running to help if I'm here in my home town. But if I'm in the city I quickly assess the situation before I jump in.

I'd rescue only women or animals.
And at worse days only animals...
    :D

I'd probably rescue anyone, but definiteli wouldn't jump into it, would get a grasp on the situation and look around if theres no one else to do the job for me...

You know, this thread reminded me of the time we drove 3 hours to Lubbock, TX to help a friend move back home and we met up with his friends who had just moved into a new neighborhood. They were telling us about how the neighborhood wasn't that bad but it kind of sucked to party because the man behind them beat his wife and the man across the street did the same with his. The husband was telling us about how the previous night one of those ladies was screaming, "Help me! Help me! Please somebody call the police!" and he just turned around, went inside, and turned up the tv so he didn't have to hear. It blew my mind. I just don't get how you wouldn't even call in an anonymous tip saying you had heard her screaming while passing through, or anything. I guess things are different in the big city but if someone here tells me to call 911, I'm calling 911 period.

It’s hard to say how I would react because it really depends on the situation, but I would probably at least try to figure out who needed help and what is going on and assist myself or try to find other people/call the police. It’s what I would expect someone to do if I screamed for help.

I helped a crack-head the other day that was calling for help by our apartment.
She had been kicked out with all her bags on the sidewalk. Burns on her legs from a grease fire (Why do people prone to passing out always like their snacks deep fried). Being a crack-head, she didn't think and threw water on it. I told her she should have used baking soda. She said they had used it all up making crack. I let her call for a ride.

My husband wasn't happy about me helping her but wtfever.

i can identify ta what ya said there heat bout always been blessed in situations like that.there are so mamy circumstances where there is no time ta think, just ta act.a few seconds or minutes can make a huge difference sometimes between life an death.there is a reason heat, you were being protected by other sources.i have been in a lot of sticky situations myself, but like you i'm still here.the last time was a few years ago.i heard trouble a few feet under my window.my neighbour was being attacked.it was a drugs thing.twas bout 5am on a winters mornin.it was very windy an stormy.the loudness of the voices woke me.i looked out the window an he was being repeatedly stabbed.i went straight down ta help him.i rang the cops on my way down the stairs.he was on the ground at his gate.just as i came round the corner i could see the knife goin towards his head.i just ran at the knife man an pushed him in the back away from him.he aimed the knife at me then when i covered my neighbour with my body,by then loadsa people were out an the guy ran off just before the cops arrived.sadly my neighbour did'nt make it.he passed away an hour later in hospital.r.i.p.but i have no regrets.i do it all again.i hated the wind i always love for a while, cos i thought if it was'nt so windy an stormy i might have heard him sooner.they got the guy that did it.he is still in prison.:)
