Words can never fully encapsulate the Reality. They can only give an imperfect description which falls far short of the thing in itself. But - if we want to learn about human cultures on any level then words we have to deal with. If you want to study the hindu scriptures for example, or the sayings of realized masters and saints, then once again, it is words. But through those words meanings are conveyed, which may asist us to have an actual experience of Reality directly. Words can for example, be used to describe methods of yoga prctice, the goal of which is the direct experience of 'what is' in it's completedness. Shastra is said to be one of the four principal aids to the yogi. (the others are utsaha, or personal effort, guru, and kala, time)
