Hotel Goricina, Croatia Hotel Goricina was once a luxe escape in a Yugoslavian military resort, which was destroyed in the Croatian War of Independence, along with a string of other hotels. Today, pink bougainvillea and the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea pop against the stark disarray of this abandoned Croatian coast hotel.
Hachijo Royal Hotel, Japan Located on the lush Japanese island of Hachijojima, Hachijo Royal Hotel was once one of the country's largest resorts. The French Baroque architecture juxtaposed against the moss and overgrown trees are seriously eerie.
Beelitz, Germany Creepy, sure, but the cheerful sky blue paint (or what's left of it) and that pretty swirly window also remind us of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Dating back to the 1800s, this complex functioned as a military hospital during times of war. The surrounding area was abandoned in the mid 1990s when Soviet forces withdrew from Germany.
This place used to sell trailers and small campers. I loved because it was in town and had great parts supplies. The folks could help you figure out what you needed if you weren’t sure. But alas, another victim of Amazon and big box stores 30 miles away.
A historic building in our town last used as a restaurant. Sad it’s empty and falling into disrepair.
GARTLOCH HOSPITAL, GLASGOW Few places are more eerie than abandoned Victorian asylums, but Gartloch Hospital in Glasgow cuts an especially intimidating form on the landscape. Opened in 1896 at the behest of the ominously named City of Glasgow District Lunacy Board, the hospital’s capacity expanded steadily throughout the early 20th century. By 1904, 830 beds were available for psychiatric patients along with a 50-bed sanatorium ward for tuberculosis sufferers, which operated until the end of World War Two. Gartloch finally closed in 1996 and much of the site has now been transformed into Gartloch Village, though the empty shell of the former administration building – every bit the classic image from a Gothic Victorian horror story – still looms menacingly over the surrounding landscape.
