and we will always have that old music with us. but there is more to music than an expression of someone. there is an element of music which is just.. the music + the listener. void of meaning. more of a stimulation which interacts with the music part of the brain, without having to involve direct meanings or emotions or expressions of a soul. pure rhythm+tension+release.
some music attempts to, not connect you to the person writing it, but connect you to the world surrounding it
I don't feel that pure rhythm tension release with electronic music. It just doesn't cut it for me. I maintain that that old music does a better job of this. Man i understand your point completely. When i said that Rock n' Roll from the 60's when i listen to it connects me to the artist, I didn't mean thats all it does I meant thats one of the connections it creates.
i feel psytrance does things for me that stuff from 60's and 70's cant. different strokes for different folks i guess. i don't know about you, but when i am tripping blended face in the middle of the woods with about a hundred other people dancing and pushing their bodies to the limits, and wondering if we are going to have enough baskets for all these severed kitten heads, i want some psytrance blasting out of the speakers. :hat:
i always say you have to listen differently than the way you've listened to music before. it's less about immediate gratification in a 3-4 minute top 40 span and more about rewarding your patience. i used to hate electronic music and cling to the rock music that's been playing out of the radio over the last 30 years. but you know..if you start to pick apart what you hate about electronic music..and then listen in the music you think is "good music" you'll hear a lot of the same stuff. i had a friend who it seemed to me only hated electronic music because he was "supposed to" and i showed him all sorts of "his" music that was based on simple repetitions. you just have to listen differently.
A neat thing about electronic music is that the artist has a wider array of sounds easily available to them... I feel like the artist is more able to express what they're trying to get at and that's just swell. OTOH, being constrained to physical instruments and simple effects presents a challenge, and being able to use them to decent effect is delicious artistry... If I'm in the mood to admire someone I'll listen to old music.
