1. The Hipforums announces it first ever fundraiser. After nearly 30 years online, we must ask our members and guests to help support the website. Thanks to years of ongoing financial support of our members, advertisers and volunteer admin staff, we have been able to keep the forums alive.

Now we must ask for help as available funds have all been used for our Internet server and other fees.

So please donate any amount to our PayPal account donate@Hipforum.com to keep the site going. If we can get enough for a few months fees, we won't need to nag you again!

Yeah, that's terrible to not be sure if the money will be used properly :( But does it really change anything for you if the kind of animal that's being hunted wouldn't be threatened with extinction?

I hold the seemingly controversial view that purposely killing any mammal just so we can stuff it or take a picture of it for some kind of glory is a shit thing to do, but the fact that this is an elephant, yes, does give it an added dimension

Of course because they are so in danger of extinction. There is a very real possibility of there being no truly wild elephants at all in the frighteningly near future. Also because of what we know about an elephant's mind and heart. Ellies have a special intelligence which is far superior and better developed than most other mammals. This is advanced, like a dolphin or great ape mind, with a lot of humanlike qualities and complex reasoning. Elephants openly empathise with one another, try and heal other wounded elephants, comfort eachother when sad, grieve for their dead and have an astounding long term memory. An elephant's mind is just incredible and we still have more to learn

Having said that, most creatures are underestimated. But there's no denying the intellect and sentience of an elephant

Well, that's not controversial at all. Only to some people, hehe. It gets a little bit more controversial perhaps when this view also includes killing for food and/or clothing. I personally think it all lies in the details, I don't like to see a healthy animal that doesn't do any huge damage on it's natural surroundings being killed either for whatever reason. I do understand the fun of a good hunt though, I'm afraid. But not if it's only for the kill.

I don't think that's particularly controversial in the developd nations, though those who hold that view are still a minority. I think it's a "curve", a continuum, an "expanding circle" or whatever you want to call it, where those who actually consider the issues thoughtfully cannot but come to the conclusion that causing harm to sentient creatures for no good reason is wrong. The case for not using mammals for food where it can be avoided is plain, unequivocal and unarguable, and those who don't see that are plain and simple wrong, they are missing what is essentially an ethical "fact", if I can use that term. I was a meat eater for many years before it finally clicked with me, so I know how easy it is to convince yourself of something which in hindsight is plainly incorrect and habitually do something which is obviously wrong, usually by simply ignoring the facts of the matter.

Anyway if vegetarianism is a curve of increasing ethical awareness meat eaters are behind it, they are failing to understand something important, but this is for fairly straightforward cultural reasons. These guys who hunt endangered species have no excuse at all, they are so far behind that I find it hard to believe this is actually legal, but unfortunately in Tanzania it seems to be...

I actually don't have anything to say about this, it's just fucked...I think we should hunt hunters and hang them upside down in a tree and beat them with flippers until they beg for forgiveness.
