I don't think it was necessarily a bad question. I mean, there is a regional and cultural set of speaking all over the country, black society has it's own set of linguistics and slang which are distinct. We Texans do too. Yee Hah. I just think he phrased it poorly. From my experience, it just sounds kinda lame when seeing someone immatate something which they have no experience with, but not really much more offensive than hearing someone fake a Texan accent. I'm not black of course. And than again, some white people grow up in predominantly black neighborhoods and will adopt styles of speech from their friends. That's not disingenuous.
There are variations in the political and legal systems between states (e.g., Texas vs. New York). And cities. And legislative districts within cities. And neighborhood associations. And different co-op apartment buildings. And households. And cells within the bodies of individuals within that household. And atoms within those cells, etc. etc. ad infinitum. Why choose to call them American? Why not Brooklynite? Or South Central L.A.ians? Or westerners? Or human beings? Or Africans (since we all descend from it)? Or perhaps Milky-Wayians??
I wasn't milking ironic humour, I just tried to include a little of it. If I wanted to go the whole shebang I would have included every other word I identify with hip hop, I was tempted to do it but refrained for reasons that you have already given. You're just picking at a minute fault because you enjoy being indignant and preachy and you know it lode. The enormous fault is thinking along the lines of one race's ownership of a particular speak, which essentially does put up some racial barriers. It was probably the wrong thread to make. It probably wasn't a question that was worth bringing up in the first place and I should have known I would cop flack for it. That I take responsibility for.
I was considering posting "White liberal guilt and the G-culture?" but I thought it would be taken wrongly - but now I feel safe since there is a friendlier version.
i've noticed that a lot of black people are ostracized and ridiculed by "real blacks" for not conforming to urban black culture.
I can't speak for african americans, but I know it just sounds lame when white aussies say shit like "fo shizzle" or "g-unittttt! respect!", stuff they just picked up from black music videos. lame white mother fuckers, that's what they sound like to me.
We make fun of my one friend in a loving way for being our token - and he is one of those blacks. His sister constantly ridicules him for acting white. I do, when appropriate for the specific discussion. However, I've noticed, you haven't said anything in defense of the label African American...
I totally agree. I hope I didn't give anybody the impression that I think that all black people talk like snoop dogg.
I kind of think the Chinese are rendering the U.S. old and busted as we speak, and they are older than the French.
yeah and ill crip walk, then belly dance, do a rain dance, while toting an ak-47 gotta represent for what i am!
No, I don't necessarily think it was a bad concept for a thread, just framed wrong, which is why you got a negative response from two black posters. I'm honestly not arguing to be a douche to make you look bad or to show righteous indignation. Just trying to rephrase the discussion.
don't let my confederate flag scare you :lays the deliverance theme song:: yeah, those stereotypes gotta be annoying
