Winter is setting in nicely. The ground has changed from brown to white, and I suspect it won't change back until mid May.

We going to build a new larger cabin, so this winter will be spent cutting the logs and milling lumber with my chainsaw. I can mill a log 8 feet long and about 16 inches in diameter in less than 45 minutes. I mostly cut 2 X 6 lumber with the left-overs used for 1 inch slab boards. We have a Ski Doo that works great for skidding the logs, and sliding them on snow keeps everything nice and clean. (Dirty logs ruin saw chain VERY fast)

Here's a video of me milling logs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvQuS4gugL4"]YouTube - Chainsaw Milling Lumber

I sure needed to secure the log better! Sometimes I get in a bit of a hurry.

working with a chainsaw it's better to be fancy than sorry.....i've seen too many cuts and accidents from people who didn't think protective gear was necessary

I've seen too many accidents from people waking up in the morning to think protective gear is going to help them...

edited to add... that wasnt directed at anyone lol

If you can afford the safety gear and you feel you need it, use it...

But its still not going to stop it from being fancy... lol

The homestead is about 20 miles South of Denali Park, and about 80 miles West of Talkeetna (near the Yentna River).

I hope you enjoy Alaska as much as I do. Let me know when you want to visit.

Safety come first. It may not be as fun and daring, but at least you stand a better chance of completing the project with little to no injury.

Fun or daring? Yes, those were the reasons that were given...

How about you fuck off back under your rock now?

    A) I'm sorry you feel that way.

    B) I never expected you too. I suppose you can not read them if you don't like them.

    C) Perhaps THIS response, but the comment I made that you expressed anger over had nothing (on my end) to do with you or anything you said. I stated MY opinion.

If you like we can discuss this further in private.

You got caught in my reaction to someone else, and unfortunately... I wasn't in the mood to be reasonable at the time...

    my apologies...

The creeks have been freezing-up nicely, and I can at last ride the ol' snowgo to the runway. (Snowgo? That's Alaska for snowmobile.) A plane load of supplies arrived, and it was really nice to NOT need my back-pack to get everything home. :sunny:

We usually get a supply plane 3 or 4 times a year. I haven't gone to town since June, but need to make the trip next month. Kinda sucks to have to deal with the civilization at all.
