I'm still waiting to read a report about someone chewing salvia instead of smoking it. If you believe in the spiritial side of things, I think the mazatec thought it was disrespectful to smoke it and that that's why the ''shepherdess'' would kick your ass when you did that.
I believe it too, from everything I have read about Salvia use in the Mazatec culture. On Erowid's Salvia timeline, the first recorded instance of Salvia being smoked was not until the 1970s, IIRC I don't believe the Mazatecs smoked it at all. IF, and that's a big if, I ever have Salvia again I will chew it or take a sublingual tincture. I will never, ever smoke it again and I can say that with 100% certainty. The whole experience just felt WRONG in every way.
I read of a guy who had a plant, and he was treating it with the utmost respect and never had any problems. He was talking about how Salvia is a warrior goddess and she will protect him and his family as long as he treats her right. He only chewed her, and he only chewed the leaves if she ''Gave'' them to him (if they fell of naturally).
Personally I don't like the Salviadorans. The warrior goddesses in whatever manifestations they take can kiss my humaniod ASS.
A very interesting expierence, although it makes me think i'm inside of a giant bubble made of clear legos. incidently not the best feeling when in freeway traffic lol

Yeah salvia is definitely not enjoyable to me. It tears your sense of reality into pieces, so that you have no idea what it is. It creates extreme confusion and can cause intense hallucinations.
It's one of those things, really. If you're doing it for fun, you'd better be ready for more damn fun than you can handle in a lifetime or that pleasure is going to boil right over to fear. You must swim with the current and ski round the trees, not into them. I really want to try the oral method, if anything just to stay in the salvia world for longer. People describe it as harrowing or hellish but for me, granted I've only done it twice, it's more like heaven!
