its anthropomorphize. and theres nothing anthropormorphic about it. cats are not machines. they have needs and feelings just like the rest of us.......those needs are not unique to humans

...I wasn't saying to force your cats outside, simply saying giving them the option! I'm well aware that some cats prefer it indoors and that's fine, but lots do not!

"just like with us. if i stayed in my house day after day for my whole life i'd be safe....wouldnt take the chance of dying in a car wreck or something else happening to me out in the world......but no one wants to live that way."
That would be my response to what wrat said as well. sure it can be dangerous but I don't feel it's my responsibilty to hold any animal prisoner. I don't really agree with the whole concept of pets and even domesticating animals, but the fact is it happens and the best I can do is liberate them from shelthers or whatever and let them be as free as possible within my means. I don't feel that cats are on the same level as babies! They are very intelligent creatures...accidents do happen but I think letting them live a free life is worth the risk.

Damn I suck at spelling oh well..nope animals are not like machines nor people for that matter..all things great and small have needs..have you ever seen a dog or cat hit by a car?? its not pretty..when I was much younger one of my dogs was running free and I watched in horror as a car sped down the road and I could not get to him in time they hit my dog and I watched the spark of life get snuffed out of his eyes..and this was in a pretty rural setting....

i think if you declaw your cats, you really have to keep them inside, they would probably be killed by some other animal

if you feel the need to declaw them, you should probably not have cats around in the first place.

Let them out - do it slowly. Get them micro-chipped so if they get lost they can be found. As for the fights all cats get into fights - I have 3 and thats who they are.

I dont agree on keeping animals inside - if you HAVE to do that because of where you live give the cats to new owners.

Yeah, because there are so many new owners to give your pets away to...that's why we find so many in animal shelters. Sorry, I don't mean to take the sarcastic route but reading alot of these posts, I see where everyone is coming from...what I can't stand is the holier than thou attitude that come from some of these posts. Let them in, keep them out, whatever. You're not better than anyone else because you let your cat out and don't keep it "confined". I don't think I practice in animal cruelty because I only let our cat out in the yard where she can be mostly supervised. There is a main road (closest thing you can get to a highway in Maui) close to where I live where I have seen many dead cats. So, yeah, call me paranoid but I'm not about to give my cat away because I live near a big, scary road and not on some beautiful farm somewhere! For me, she is one of the most precious things in my life and I tend to think of myself as a protective Mom. She even gets pissy at me if I leave her outside and forget about her so I know that she likes the fact that I give her alot of attention. So she's spoiled, confined, whatever you want to call it. And I don't agree with de-clawing but my 1st cat came to me that way (from a previous owner) and the day she got out, she got eaten by a coyote. So, all I am saying is that there is no definitive way to have your pet live...it's not all black and white as pets all have different personalities and needs.

Sorry if this post was long and also bitchy. I'm going through this hormonal pregnancy thing ;) and tend to go a bit on the defensive...hopefully somebody will see my point though!
