Canada is nothing like the US, despite geographical statistics. Ironically Americans often compare the two, Canada gets dragged into an issue along with the States. Alot of the Canadians I've met didn't know much about American politics. Despite what some Americans might think, be it the media or people, a lot of Canadians don't give a rats ass about the US or what goes on there. They are two completely different places.
I just love the way people who had the opportunity to be born before me know everything... Experience gives people a false sense of superiority. You actually are just saying things that have happened to you or around you in you life, and saying that from those empirical reasons that there is some objective certainty in your claims?
BTW, I'm still waiting for an explanation of why the US had incarcerated 7 times the # of ppl (per capita) than China, far more than any other country if we are not a Police State? We incarcerate more than any other Police State. So perhaps the US in not just a police state, but perhaps the WORST POLICE STATE in the world...
Actually only about 1/3 of Americans have guns, which means most Americans don't have guns, and this varies greatly by place to places like Mississippi that break 50% ownership, to places like Rhode Island that have 11-12% ownership. The majority of legal guns out there are long rifles too not handguns. Other countries never experienced the violent crime wave the US did in the 80's and early 90's, nor do they have the crack and meth epidemics with tweakers running around everywhere that the US does. Maybe our genes are broken. Failed drug war policy combined with harsh sentence and mandatory minimums left over from the crack epidemic. However many states are now going back and changing these laws. This combined with a bail bonds system that has far too much influence and institutional racism in the courts. Many states, Washington being one that's currently doing it is taking measures to reign in the bail bonds system. Police states have don't have the option to change their system. The fact remains the current system remains in place for so long and has become so abusive because to be blunt, most people don't give a fuck. It's a non issue for most people. Most people will never be arrested, and a further majority of people will never spend more than a night in jail. *edit* And going back to what I said 10 pages ago, you can't lump the entire US as one whole entity when discussing things like this. Every state is a sovereign entity and the vast majority of laws and regulations, including criminal law that effects a person's daily life are made at the state level. How Alabama treats it's law system is far different than Connecticut. It doesn't even follow assumed stereotypes, California last month ruled it's legal for cops in California to search a person's cell phone if they're under arrest, meanwhile in more conservative Ohio, a court the year before ruled the exact opposite.
Syd, you totally miss the point (that I've made before) that the only reason we have so many ppl in prison is because it's a BIG PROFIT CENTER FOR CORPORATIONS. It's about money. Once you get arrested in America, no matter what the charge, you are probably going to spend at least $1,000, perhaps 10xs that, possibly way more. Whether or not you get convicted, you are still going to pay. Lawyers, corporate treatment, appeals, etc. It's all about PROFIT because that is what America is all about. It's one of the ONLY growing industries in America in the past decade in case you didn't notice... And guess what? Some states are starting to jail people who are in debt. Yup, debtor prisons are coming soon to a state near you! But no, the US isn't a police state! Owe money, can't pay? Go directly to Jail! http://www.walletpop.com/2010/07/15/americas-new-debtor-prison-jail-time-being-given-to-those-who/
I do not think "police state" paints quite as precise an image as "national corporate policy". In agricultural terms one might see the current crop of human resources on the verge of being plowed under because the soil has been depleted..
Now you're seeing the BIG picture... National Corporate Policy = National Corporate Police! Good example, the crackdown on piracy. Gotta keep those corporate coffers overflowing with the proceeds of overpriced entertainment. In Agricultural terms, American soil has been completely spoiled. Nothing will grow here anymore. Plant a seed and it withers, that is if you can afford the seed Monsanto Inc. sells ya, cause that's all you can get anymore... Why plant more human seed here in the US, when it costs so much less to plant human seeds elsewhere, with much higher yields! With American soil so in debt, the Corporations no longer expect any significant yields here, so they invest elsewhere and don't waste money trying to till this barren soil anymore. Ah but there is still a LOT of money to be extracted from the soil! Just guarding the soil (from whom? Who wants this wasteland anymore?) is very profitable. And those that trespass or abuse the soil are made to pay dearly for their transgressions. Once they have squeezed the last dime out of the soil, they will completely turn their backs on it and let it get washed away by the flood of discontent it has created. The hunger for good soil will likely mean war one way or another, either International or civil... The only question is, when?
This is not true. More farmers do not use Monsanto than do. iInfact "more" stretches into the millions rather then Monsanto customers that stretch into the thousands.
On top of it genetically modified food is designed to be more resistant to herbicides and various plant viruses and funguses. If the soil is shit nothing is going to grow still. Also the US still ranked 3rd in agriculture behind China and India in output in 2009 with about $171 billion of product.
And those thousands probably have far more land under cultivation than the "millions" you claim, which is way beyond reality. How many farmers are there in the US? 751,000. There are a total of 751,000 farmers and ranchers in the US in 2008. This is according to data from the 2010 Statistical Abstract of the US Census Bureau. That figure is FAR LESS than there used to be a few decades ago. That is partially due to Monsanto themselves. They have altered the economics of farming to the point where most farmers cannot afford to compete with the huge corporate farms under Monsanto's wings. This is just ONE of many criminal acts that has been perpetrated upon America and the rest of the world by this one company. There are many crimes against Humanity on the part of Monsanto, most of them worst than the economics imposed by this company. The environmental and social consequences are staggering and under reported in US media. Monsanto GM products were banned in the EU until very recently, I believe. BTW the biggest single Monsanto product for agriculture is Roundup, and nearly all non-organic farmers use it (depending upon what they're growing). Plus millions of homeowners use Monsanto's roundup and other toxic shit they produce. The patent on that pesticide expired, so now there are even more companies producing it (in China). If anything is killing America's "soil" it's Monsanto and Roundup. Did you guys completely miss the analogy Stinkfoot and I were making? Oh well. See right there is part of the problem. People see and read what they want to see and read.
I didn't even read the posts on the last page, but now that I did for example Maybe because it's illegal, somebody's work be it music, film, art or whatever is not just yours because the internet exists. And what crack down, they try to make examples once in a while, everyone here has probably thousands of illegally downloaded songs and no one has cops knocking on their door about it. The music one I always find the most interesting, I download tons of illegal songs, but I don't try to justify it in anyway, it's stealing music. You can complain about music companies all you want but musicians are not in it just to make people happy otherwise they would not have voluntarily entered into a recording contract with a music corporation in an effort to make lots of money.
LMAO, so you think this current system (and the old system) is FAIR to musicians... You are so misinformed. I guess that's why most musicians are so successful and all make a good living at it, right? It's the SYSTEM ripping off both the musicians and the consumers of music. It was a consumer revolt, via MP3 technology that even caused the music industry to sell digital copies at all much less without digital protection. what hassles people have just making copies of their own music. As far as I'm concerned once you buy a piece of music YOU OWN IT, you can make as many copies for yourself for every device and format you want. But no, they expect you to buy a 78, then 45, then 33, then 8-track, then cassette, then CD, then mini-disc, now MP3 or proprietary formats. So if you had one song you like, you may have already purchased it 7 or more times on various media cause you couldn't legally make copies. Is that fair? And the price you must STILL PAY for a CD, despite the music industry losing lawsuits over their high prices, only lead to the death of CD sales and more whining by the Industry that they are "losing" sales. It's their own damn fault for charging so much! LIKE THESE GUYS AREN'T FUCKING RICH ENOUGH YET OFF THE LABOR AND TALENTS OF OTHERS! Give me a fucking break. Spewing such nonsensical support for such a RIP OFF INDUSTRY only belies your ignorance yet again. BTW, the mass illegal copying of copyrighted music by millions of people world wide is called CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE (similar in theory to what is happening now in Egypt), and a recognized human right when the people are being abused politically, socially or economically.
So the tear gas that was used on the protesters in Egypt was made in the American Police State, Dictator Export Division. We're not a police state? Yet we are the biggest exporters of weaponry in the world. We love to foment wars so that our military/industrial complex can make huge profits from things like bombs, guns and tear gas used to quell a restless citizenry attempting to overthrow a ruthless dictator. But keep telling yourself....This isn't a Police State....This isn't a Police State. Keep on believing in the illusion of "American Might Makes Right" When will the US stop arming dictators and stop locking up its own citizens for profit?
Hmmm... perhaps the United Corporations of America can run military weapons infomercials elsewhere... promotional television spots shown around the world and make a killing off the killing biz. Phone orders welcome.... "Welcome to the Insurgency Supply Outlet where you assault ruthless dictators and we assault low prices..." I wonder if such a venture might offer discounts for weapons orders placed to fight ruthless dictators we ourselves installed.
Uh, what you wrote is not a joke. That is exactly how it goes. They produce incredibly slick promos for weapons at those International shows. And yes, phone orders are usually followed up with multi-million dollar deals. The US only supplies its own funded political insurgencies, like the Contras in Nicaragua. I am starting to believe that this whole revolution is a CIA operation, as some have said. I bet they wish they could get some arms in the arms of the protesters in Cairo, as last year they would've liked to get them to Tehran...
I wonder if China is contemplating the placement of an order to have Corp USA overthrow itself. I do believe they have the money. The best parody is that which most resembles the truth
