ah, those shitty things? they are NOT proper American doughnuts. I've found anything that is in England and claims to be "American" is going to taste like shite. just like anything in America and claims to be "English" is probably going to taste like shite too. You want a good American doughnut ... find a Krispy Kreme (or Krispy Krack as they are commonly referred to) store.
just so you know underground ... i don't think they do Dunkin Donuts at all over here and the only Krispy Kremes are in London. They transport 'fresh' doughnuts to some of the area Tesco stores but sell them for a staggering £6.99 a dozen (that's $13.00 a dozen just to give you a comparison). Nothing like paying $4.99 for a HOT dozen glazed. *mmmm -- my inner Homer is coming out *
Are you one of thewm americans then ? over here in this forum we say "jam " not jelly - jelly is what kids have at their birthday parties and you put it in the fridge and leave it to set for a few hours - jam is what u make out of fruit etc and ya spread it on bread and have a blackcurrant jam sandwich
jelly is clarified fruit juice thickened with pectin, jam has pureed bits of fruit in it. preserved have large pieces of fruit.
ok ok we didnt need a big lecture - so how come americans dont eat jam then? or at least they are always going on about their jelly like its good = i have eaten that jelly stuff you mention but its rubbish best put some jam on it - especially if youre totally mashed like I am right now
mainly it's just the younguns who eat jelly. it's a texture/sweetness thing. it's also cheaper, so since the kids are happy, why spend more money? but a walk downt the aisle at a grocery store, you're going to be inundated with a profusions of jams and preserves. we love anything sweet. we're a bunch of fat bastards, right?
jelly over in England is what Jello is in the States ... i have always found these differences a bit unnerving really. especially since i knew people who came from Leroy, NY that claimed Jello was invented there and apparently there is a big celebration each year about it, but then did jelly come first?
Jelly has been about since time immemorial (gelatine), used to be mainly savoury though. I like Cinnamon Doughnuts, hmmm.
I used to always tease when the Krispy Kreme opened in the area I lived in that they must be Krispy Crack. For the first two weeks that they were open (and they are open 24 hours a day) there was ALWAYS a HUGE queue through the drive through and at the counter for people to buy a doughnut. Seriously! I had a friend that worked there and she said it was madness as someone would wait in line for 2 hours to buy 1 doughnut. All my friends and I started to refer to it as Krispy Krack. And joke about what they put in their glaze. I tried to find the clip from his standup act, but it struck me that I wasn't the only one who felt this way when I saw Chris Rock's "Bigger and Blacker" tour on telly. He did a sketch about Krispy Kreme and says: so, yes, for real. they are commonly referred to as Krispy Crack. I did also find one website that had an article from the Daily Telegraph from 30/5/2004 where it says: swear on my life it's true. might not be full country-wide that people talk about it like that maybe for instance it's different in KC's part of the country; but in Western, NY at least, that's how everyone I knew talked about Krispy Kreme. But damned there good ... don't think I'd go quite as far as Chris Rock says; but when I lived there we did make several trips at 3am to go buy doughnuts.
Hah, nothing compares to freshly fried doughnuts off a market stall.. just dipped in sugar, piping hot, delicious. Screw all this jam, icing, custard and whatnot. A doughnut is a ring of dough, deep fried and covered in sugar. Plus down my local car boot they're 6 for £2! how good is that!
oh yes. it's exactly the same here. or, rather, in long beach, california. insane. you'll risk your life for some krispy kreme.
you'll go to any length to talk shit about my country wont you? *laughs hysterically* and many of us do eat jam/preserves FYI
Just arrived in Toronto yesterday, here for 2 months, mostly in a hippie squat down the road from my dad's. The woman on the plane next to me said her favourite thing about Canada was Tim Hortons (donuts and shit coffee). Other things they put crack in - pringles, obviously (once you pop, you can't stop), and lip balm/vaseline - the more you put on your lips, the more you need it, otherwise your lips crack really easily.
use a lip balm that doesn't contain petroleum products. they dry out your lips. get the natural oil based stuff, avocado oil applied directly to your lips works really well too.
I use to make home made doughnuts from scratch. Nothing beats those. any mass produced doughnut sucks anywhere. go for the home made stuff.
Thats what I'm sayin'! Go to Atlanta, GA to the Krispy Kreme on Ponce DeLeon Ave. and get em' while the light is on! (meaning that they're fresh) melt in your mouth they will..... ya limey fops
