How unsursprising, Matt, that you should be impressed with the routine evasive blather of PB. He fancies himself the resident quip artist and I must say that is about as far as his contribution to any serious scrutiny of the issues extends.

Then again, that in itself is hardly surprising in light of his evident reliance on tabloid level punditry for his dismissive worldview.

I appreciate i should have added a few :p  or whatever (would that have made any diffrence in you thinking me and PB were not part of some mutual appreciation club ?).

I was just trying to lighten the atmosphere (badly it seems) :p <---- joking see , lighten up.

Well I'm a bit burnt out from typing today so I will respond to your previous posts and expand upon the subject we were discussing over the next few days. May not be till Saturday as I'm out at a policy conference for the next two days.

Yeah, why should we change as long as there is some other country that behaves worse than us?

What an ignorant attutide to have.

Quite simply slutter, because any credibility to wave a finger at others must be preconditioned by a worthy example that we do not emulate those same atrocities and practices. That credibility is gone and our hypocrisy clear the world over.

Those other nations to which you wish to keep your eyes diverted are not the ones extolling themselves as the bastion of liberty and democracy (whilst systematically dismantling those virtues to install a comprehensive police/surveillance state). We are.

As citizens it is beholden upon us to remain vigilant against the rise of tyranny and abuse of power of OUR elected leaders (or in this case fraudulently imposed leaders) not the leaders of other nations and citizenries.

Those who live in glass houses...

actually amnesty international has quite a bit to say about sudan:
    http://www.amnesty.org/results/is/eng
they are not "ignoring" the violations in sudan, simply because they *also* address US human rights violations - and chinese, and mexican, etc.

my *post* was about the US violations because i *live* in the US. that does not mean that i ignore human rights relations around the rest of the world, anymore than it indicates that AI is ignoring the rest of the world just because the US is one of the countires it mentions. nor was the entire report about the US. the fact that we are not exempt from scrutiny does not mean that we are being "singled out", nor does it mean that they're "concentrating" on US violations - although certainly american papers & other american media are going to give more attention to reporting the attention given to the US, for the same reason i'm posting about it. (this does not mean that i don't think that worldwide, or for that matter US human rights violations are grossly under-reported.) american *papers* will give more attention to american issues, because most americans who buy the papers don't really give a fat damn what's being said about other countries. just because the papers focus on it, and i post about it, doesn't mean the rest of the world is being ignored.

and i agree with sera michele, "we don't need to change because other places are worse" is an ignorant, arrogant, self-righteous attitude to have!
