one is one as is the other. they are the same thing. but individuals do not breed these thoughts on their own, it is as a whole they are poisonous.

u have to understand that anorexia is a mental illness.. but yeah, i know what u mean.. i had eds and when i had almost got over them, i hated to hear my friend saying that she couldn´t stop vomiting... i hated myself because i realiced how stupid i had been, and it got on my nerves when she told me about her problems.. maybe it was because i was afraid of starting again vomiting or something.. but i really thought that she was selfish, stupid and so on.. now i think it´s an illness and it´s not oinly my friend´s fault but also society´s fault ( i dislike this society so much!! ) I think they should ban a lot of products and change a lot of things so there were not so many people with these problems... :(

part of it is society... at times, though for everyone it's different.

for me it seemed to always be a coping method... My life always felt like it was out of control, and to not eat seemed to make me feel better about keeping control of something...especially because its the one thing no one can make you do or not do. But, having that thought in itself is false because it's not taking control, it's losing control...and the disorder begins to control you. not the other way around.

society doesn't help people who already have these problems though, i know that much. but...i dont even want to get into this discussion anymore, it's too hard, and to explain it to people who have never experienced it is beyond impossible. some people are understanding and sensitive enough to realize that it's a disease that one can't control...but anyone who has never had it will never understand it fully. so..im walking away from this thread... to discuss it is almost too much for my heart to handle.

_I was going to say that ED's -eating disorders- have become very "popular"/"trendy". Just read blogs/diaries online, everyone seems to be "ANA" & "MIA" lately.

On the original topic, generalizations are a sign of ignorance.

    haa...you made me laugh.

anyway...i think this kid just needs some growing up to do, when you're young you don't understand why a lot of things are the way they are. and i agree with whoever it was that said these girls were probably making it up, they most likely are to get attention, i had a friend when i was 14 who did that. she would run around and tell everyone that she was sick of being fat and that she was going to start being anorexic and bulimic.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that a lot of people just don't understand the disorder in itself, and many people don't even see it as a disorder, they see it as a choice [BECAUSE they don't understand]

I remember one time I went to the doctor [about a year ago] and when the nurse was about to weigh me, I naturally stepped on the scale backwards [this is what they had me do when I was in therapy]...she asked me what was up and I briefly explained that I was a recovered anorexic, and I still like to pay no attention to the weight that I'm at... The nurse ...I wanted to fucking slap her when she said, "Oh, haha I wish I had enough willpower to be anorexic... then I could get rid of these excess pounds"

That pissed me off horribly. Especially since it was coming from a fucking NURSE.

For anyone who thinks it's a choice is wrong, [regarding anyone who TRULY has an eating disorder...not just trying to be trendy] When my eating disorder started, I didn't have a CLUE what was going on, I was completely oblivious. Almost everyday at school one of my friends would haul me over to the "Counselling Corner" in our school because of my [lack of] eating... And I honestly thought they were all being absurd...I never made a conscious effot NOT to eat when it started out.

The problem with young girls (or boys) as viewing it as trendy, is if they make the effort to stop eating, they very well could make it that much easier for them to slip into an actual disorder. I learned from my therapist that when people who are ill with an ED become so accustomed to ignoring the normal signs of hunger [stomach growling, headache, etc] that they begin to not even realize when they're hungry... If kids begin to stop themselves from eating out of trying to "be trendy" [which is so much fucking bullshit] they're putting themselves at risk to actually become ill with the disorder... and it's NOT something they want. They just dont realize what it really is...

UGH, this pisses me off to an extreme.

Another thing that really gets to me is the media with eating disorders. For example, there was so MUCH exploitation on Mary Kate Olsen and her eating disorder... and it's a horrible thing to put out there when there are millions of young girls admiring her, thinking she's beautiful, etc... The whole thing irritates me... And you know the fucking media glamourizes eating disorders, which is complete crap.

I also remember reading one time that some billboard got taken down because it was a billboard for FRIENDS [the show] and it showed the three women and a title overhead that read, "Cute Anorexic Chicks." How fucking retarded can people be

_Apples+Oranjes is right, people that are suffering from an ED are usually not doing it for the weight, it's more about control or lack of & seem to slip into to it, rather than "programming" it.

& people don't wake up one day not being anorexic, bullimic or overeater. It's an extremely long & painful process.

Eating disorders, like obesity, are just things I don't understand. To do anything besides eat when I'm hungry strikes me as hugely unnatural.

Not to take away from anybody else, though.
