Making progress I posted a picture of this spot before this is the after- still have more to go but it's getting there Slowly returning the pathways and rock beds to how they were when we first put them in I had to dig up and replant my chives because the mint was invading them The radishes, spinach, carrots, and peas are all coming up. My favorite spot to sit, I can see almost all of the back yard from here, The small curved wall I am building is reclaimed broken brick from from the old dilapidated garage that used to reside in the same spot, I can't wait till I finish it! All the pieces of furniture were discarded, they need a bit of work but all of them are still functional. The pavers, that still need to be weeded, came from someone we knew when their pool collapsed and they no longer needed the patio and walkway that went with it, they gave them to us instead. The large stones were recently given to us by someone selling his home and he needed them moved, those are only a few of them.
Been thinking of seeing just how small scale I could get away with doing a Vermicomposting setup, like large Folgers can scale. Partly for the soil amendment and partly to raise them for our Bearded Dragon. In other news, I think I may have gotten the lid on my Furnace duct retort on tight enough to keep things inside from total combustion, guess I'll know in the morning when things cool off (Next step will be sealing the seams with local clay, if needed at least) Ziggy Popacapolis on Twitter (Can't seem to get the video to display from muh tweeter like youtube does. :/ )
We Have 12 raised beds and a large open area we use for melons and tomatoes every year. This year we will be planting a bit earlier than normal to get ahead in case we need the extra food. These are this years garlic, coming along nicely.
Yeah, I tried Vermicomposting but I think I was doing it wrong, they didn't seem to be breaking everything down the way they should.
I love your sitting place, Moon. Planted rainbow chard straight out in the garden yesterday. Pots inside.. Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans all coming together up.. I'm particularly excited about the tigerella tomatoes.. They were my favourite two years ago
Thanks Moongoddess, always great to have fresh food. This season it may come in handy, either way it will be put to good use. My horses and donkey's LOVE the carrots...lol
If we had lived near you when she was younger, our daughter would have been spending half her life in your garden playing with the dog. He looks as if he loves a lot of attention, so I doubt that he would have complained.
Our 120 feet of garden at the rear and almost as much at the front need a lot of attention, but with Jane stuck at home at the moment, they should win a few awards.
My mother's garden is elaborate. The backyard of our home is veritably covered in a plethora of various flowering plants. She has irises that are ready to bloom soon. There is even an orchid in the house someplace...
Just a little story..... Some years ago we lived out in the sticks down near the W. Virginia border in Southwestern PA. We had a nice garden going with a six foot fence so we planted a patch of cantaloupes. We got about 30 or 40 nice size melons and while waiting for them to ripen I covered them with chicken wire to ward off the garden beasts. We waited patiently and finally decided that "tomorrow" we would begin harvesting. Unfortunately the raccoons had the same idea and had stuck their little paws through the chicken wire and hollowed out every melon in one night. My wife used to shoot them with a CO2 BB gun out of our bedroom window and they'd just laugh at her as the BBs bounced off their hides.
That really sucks! Sorry you lost all your melons. I feed the raccoons, not to keep them out of my garden but just because I think they'er cute, but I haven't had a problem with anything eating so much that there wasn't any left for me... except the pears, for some reason all the pears always get eaten. I also raised a baby squirrel who had lost it's mother and hand fed her and 3 generations of her offspring.
Thanks I am growing my tomatoes, peppers, and herbs inside the greenhouse but everything else either has been or will be direct seeded this year. I hadn't really planed ahead so a lot of my stuff was late getting in the ground. My favorite tomato is this tiny one called "Tess's landrace currant tomato" they are smaller than a grape tomato but so delicious! The plant gets huge and produces tons of tomatoes and since they are so small, they are the first to ripen and get eaten. Would love to see pics when they are all in the ground
Before and after, I think we're making progress! Only 3 more rock beds need to be done, clear the weeds, lift the rocks, mulch the path, fill with compost and seed or plant. Most of these beds are already seeded but I still have to plant the climbers along the fence.
I'm using a compost pile , been dumping all the kitchen waste and weeds then covering it up . and piled up leaves and grass , every year just take the top off and get the rotted leaves and digested scraps . don't see the worms....but there is nothing left when I add more waste
We compost but we have a lot of branches and woody stems to deal with too. We usually put it through the shredder before putting it in the compost or using it for mulch but our shredder broke about 3 years ago and the pile has gotten to monstrous proportions, we gave up on our friend fixing the old shredder and just bought a new one but it's going to take a while to get everything done. We are lucky, we have a really good county transfer station where we can get free compost and mulch. I would rather just use my own but this gets the job done for now and unlike the compost I could get from the town, this does not have a bunch of plastic or glass in it.
We had continual battles with raccoons. Very nasty beasts. They can infect people with rabies and roundworm and can give distemper and parvovirus to dogs. We had to take in our bird feeders every night otherwise there would be four or five raccoons fighting over them at night. I never heard such noise, sounded like lions fighting each other. They killed one of our geese one night.
they do kill birds , seems for no reason , they don't really eat them . I've had coons , dogs , snakes , fox , and hawks . got to watch chickens all the time unless they're in a big cage , floor , walls , and roof
