I've been told dreads are dirty, get lice, get oil reservoirs inside them, and worst of all, wait for it.... MAGGOTS!

I didnt care what people thought before I got dreads, and I still couldn't care less. Let people be stupid, it's their problem! I'll sit quietly in my knatty happiness :)

I got a football kicked at me by a kid that must have been 5 or 6 year old, when i aksed what for he turned round and said 'Well you shouldn't have those things in your hair'
I get the 'How long are you going to have them?' question oh and a new favourite 'Are those the same ones you had last year?'
I don't mind the questioning as much because it shows interest. A lot of people ask whether i wash it. I'd rather they ask than assume that i don't.

Wow people really don't think of many insults. I get this one,
Shit locks, where's the weed/ganja?, Bob Marley, and more I can't quite think of.

I live in Kentucky so I get EVERYTHING you can think of. All the guys hair here is shaved or cut really short. I don't think of some of the "insults" as insults though. Side show bob, bob marley stuff like that I'm just like far out.

when i had dreads, i had to walk thru a bricklayers workshop at college to get to the classroom, and quite often the brickies would stop and start singing bob marley songs at me, but it wasnt done in an insulting way,, we all had a laugh over it =]

Some people are wind up merchants and don't mean to be malicious about it and can't see offense in it. It's annoying most of the time but if it's a break from the norm in the area then people will get excitable. It's like you learn to accept the stares. It's the nastiness that really gets me, have a joke by all means, if we can't find the funny side of situations then we'd be in a sorry state but there's no need to be abusive about it which unfortunately tends to go hand in hand with the jokes. Usually i just keep smiling regardless, that way they see it doesn't get me down :p
