The same questions are implied in the disagreement between the religious and the non religious. If I had asked "Are racists liars, or just stupid?" there would be no room to laugh... I wish we could stop appealing to common sense, until we can agree on what that is; I mean to ask: Are you laughing because the question is absurd, or because its painstakingly obvious that atheists are idiots?
I'm a little stoned right now but I must admit, I don't get the point of this thread. I thought you were atheist. If I said that it is a 100% FACT that there is no God, I'd be a STUPID LIAR. What is wrong with saying: "It seems extremely unlikely to me that any God or Gods exists after all things considered"? What is stupid or 'lying' in that statement? My views do go beyond agnosticism, in that reasoning deadlock "You can't say either way". This fails for me because no one claiming knowledge of God can produce even a definition that makes sense. Time and time again superstitions, faith, supernatural, and divine claims have been exposed as false or erroneous. Religious beliefs like creationism are blatantly absurd... How many times can you watch claims fail over and over and see faith for the ignorance that it is and still keep the POV "well you still can't say either way". The preponderance of evidence against any definition of God tips the balance of agnosticism into flat out atheism for any truly open minded person. I am an atheist, you can call me stupid, you can call me closed minded with your own oblivious closed mindedness. You can call me whatever you want but it doesn't matter because GOD MOST LIKELY DOES NOT EXIST!
We all try to make sense of the experience of being alive and beholding the world around us. That perception has changed with the technology that has allowed us to look into the cosmic and microcosmic distances. The old idea of a god up in the sky, sitting on a throne is infantile. God is just a word. Understanding the nature of our reality is a life long journey that requires living with your eyes and your mind open.
The statement "God does not exist" is falsifiable. And if the greatest component to your understanding of the universe has to do with the scientific method, the statement is absolutely reasonable. "there is no god" is like saying "the earth is 4 billion years old". Both statements have to do with all possibilities that are, in our current understanding, not reality. The second, since its arguing the affirmative gives us a slew of ages that the earth isn't.
how exactly are atheists idiots? There is nothing that scientifically proves the existence of God. Refusing to take a leap of faith based on no concrete evidence does not make one an idiot. I think believing in a parental figure that hangs out in the sky is slightly idiotic, but maybe thats just me.
I have faith that there is no god! Just kidding!! He is real and he made this dank herb I'm blazin'! God bless
Sometimes I feel like Christians and other monotheists are playing some kind of lifelong joke. In other words they all know how ridiculous their beliefs are but they all are agreeing to pretend and laughing at the rest of us.
There is no choosing in matters of fact. I don't think having faith is something you choose to do any more than you choose to think the earth is round.
The existence of God is not factual. Show me the scientific evidence that proves that God exists without a shadow of a doubt and I'll gladly retract that statement. Just because you believe in something doesn't make it factual. Most kids younger than 8 or 9 years old believe in Santa Claus. According to your logic, this belief renders him factual and real.
I feel like that too. I know some really intelligient people that firmly believe in everything about their religion. I just don't understand how otherwise intelligient, critically thinking individuals can fail to analyze and question their own religion. It almost seems like they have to realize the whole idea is somewhat ridiculous but cling to their beliefs anyways. One of the smartest people I know thinks the earth is only 7000 years old and dinosaur bones were planted by both the government and Satan in order to test peoples' faith. Uh...what?
Are Christians liars, or just stupid? Because it's pretty hard to believe that they could think some mystical sky-daddy came out of fucking nowhere and snapped his fingers and was like "MAKE THAT SHIT"! and magically it all appeared.
Man, that was put beautifully. I think I want to be an agnostic; I've always identified as an atheist agnostic, but maybe I should identify as a skeptical agnostic. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe in a conscious god, but I might believe in some form of higher power. Plus, mortality is a lot of weight for me to bear right now =P
I suspect Heeh2 may be in the same condition you are, since his posts here and elsewhere today are somewhat out of character with previous positions. But I disagree with you about the absence of a definition of God that "makes sense". God is "the unique, absolutely simple, unrestricted, unconditioned Reality...which is the continuous Creator of all else that is". (Fr. Robert Spitzer, New Proofs). Or if you prefer a more Protestant concept, God is "The Ground of all Being" (Tillich). (Whether or not that means God exists is unclear, but it does mean God isn't a supernatural being, because (S)he is the ground of all being.) Or my own favorite: "the felt presence of a Higher Power". Or we could go with God's own self-definition: "I am who am" (as distinguised from Popeye: "I yam what I yam.") On this basis, the Jewish philosopher Maimonides concludes that we can't know anything about God other than that God exists, but we can say what (S)he is'nt: not weak; not strong; not wise; not unwise; not great (Hitchens may have stolen the title of his book from Maimonides), etc. The more we meditate on these negatives, the closer we come to God by understanding (S)he is ineffable. The Upanishads likewise present a picture of godhood that is transcedent and ineffable, but also immanently present in all things, pervading, sustaining and inspiring us. Or as Saint Paul put it, God is the presence "in whom we live and move and have our being.'' So there! Now what part of those definitions doesn't "make sense"?
Are you stupid or a liar to believe that god does exist? Why can't they just believe in what they want and you let them be? You seem to be trying to be philosophical, But you just sound severely ignorant.
I may or may not be stupid, and I am a liar when addressing my enemies (and ONLY my enemies). That good enough?
Ummm... OK..... looking for a definition in that.... ... all else, he created himself I guess.... oh, he yams what he yams.... ugh, he could be a she or a he she I guess but reproductive organs.... no, can't say huh... isn't? ... ineffable... ughhhh, are you sure there's a definition in here somewhere!?
The rapture, trumpets proceeding white robes, an impossible demonstration. It depend on the god you want to believe. Our questions and convictions would undoubtedly remain, but that's because they have nothing to do with gods existence in the first place..
