I will say this, being 56yo the consolation prize is that you at least know what you want. If you don't know by then you never will.

PS, looks like I might buy 40 acres in the saw tooth mountains, may make my self a commune.

no, there are NO real hippies on here. The only hippies on here are actually just illusions. They don't exist and they never have.

It's kinda hard to tell over the ethernet who anyone really is, since it's so easy to misrepresent one's self, but if you have to try to be a hippie, you're not one. I'm gonna say that a REAL hippie would've had to experience the late sixties in his/her late teens/early twenties, so REAL hippies would be in their late fifties/early sixties now. Furthermore, a lot of REAL hippies sold out to the establishment once they became entrenched in professional jobs with families, etc., so can we still call them hippies now that they're clean cut and clad in suits? I know a few who still smoke dope and listen to the Dead.

never saw the dead my hippie experiences were my older siblings and vietnam vets who taught me to surf and to love the planet. I may not look hippie but I feel hippie. I just relate to the spiritual side of the hippie life. I have conformed to raise a child and pay a mortgage. I Guess if ya want to split hairs real hippies would not own a computer or be writing any of this. Too material and self indulgent

Owning a computer with internet has not necessarily anything to do with being a hippie or not.

yeah by the time i was in my teens most "real" hippies had packed up their peace symbols and had begun their journey to yuppydom. i, like many my age, picked up the torch, donned our tye dyes and love beads and carried on as best we could. we referred to ourselves as "late blooming flower children".

Then again, nobody owned computers back then, hardly anybody had 'em when I was in my late teens/early twenties. Nobody can fault anybody for making some compromises when it comes to paying their bills. I'm fortunate enough to have a decent job where they accept my long hair, but it hasn't always been that way. Furthermore I hope that when I'm in my late fifties/early sixties like the hippies now are I have a reasonably comfortable lifestyle, regardless if some idealistic kids a third my age wanna judge me for it.

I guess what I'm getting at is it's a soul thing, right? The material stuff doesn't matter, it's what's inside that counts. Which is why I do my best to avoid judging others based on their appearance.

i only joined this site today. i wanna find people like me who are into peace love and harmony, i cant find it. i used to hang with "bikers" they always argue about who is and what makes a real biker. i think its crazy. i tell ya. just listen to the lyrics of the songs from wood stock and the sixties and you might start to get an idea, ie share the land by the guess who, lets work together by canned heat, or was it country joe? get together by the youngbloods, and on and on til today. its not about hair or what you wear, tie dye and gettin high. its about being together. anti capitalism. being free. loving life, loving your brother, your fellow man. thats the people id hoped to meet on here. and brothers and sisters i am just about on the verge of tears cause im not finding them. i hope its just because i cant figure out how to use the site, or aint too good with computers. im grateful for any help or suggestions. and i want to find people who are interested in starting a commune.peace.

I suppose "REAL" hippies live in clapped out VW Campers with no engines and certainly no internet connection.

But it all depends how far you want to take it.

Do you have to live in a commune? Do you have to wear tie-dye?
Do you have to smoke dope / drop acid all the time?
Do you have to have lived through the 60's?

There's the spiritual / mental side as well, such as believing in peace, love and freedom.

I think that counts more than the material way you live your life,

though obviously if you earn your living as an arms dealer you can't really call yourself a hippie.

I think acting for the good of others is a good general principle of being a hippie,

and just being chilled out and appreciating nature and the wonder of the universe.

So I think you can still be a hippie in today's world, though modern pressures

are sadly putting ever more of a squeeze on the hippie philosophy in my view.
