I guess I was confused by you saying "the music comes from inside you types". Because even if you do know the rules and how they can be bent or broken, I still think that comes from within. I don't see the kind of people who create theory-generated pop as creating something that has come from within.

They have more fun, at the cost of themselves and others. The joy an immoral person may feel doing their immoral things is balanced out by the pain they cause to others by consuming whatever it is they consume or take advantage of, not to mention the self-degrading behavior they take part in (liver damage/collapsed veins/stds) that damages their bodies and minds.

The immoral may get great joy from feeling like they break the rules, but this is balanced by the bitterness that causes them to seek such joy in deviant behavior.

    Thank you SelfControl,

You're a breath of fresh air in this great void! I posed this question to try to spurn an open conversation about morality and to try to get folks to think beyond their opinions. We have so many unwritten rules to which everyone must acquiesce or otherwise end up maligned with society at large. As for the morality of music.....i.e. sound(not the meaning of lyrics).....there was a time when the interval of the minor third was considered dissonant, and the therefore the devil. It was the Church that decided this, not the collective.

The problem I find with most philosophic conversations is a lack of definitions. You don't define “moral” or what “fun” is. Thus I could define moral as anything that is fun and thus by definition being immoral would have to be less fun.

That's sort of the point, how do we define morality?
There seems to be some moralities that are inherent, because they are so ingrained, due to our indoctrination from birth to the collective morality, as to be ineffable.
So can you really define your own morality?
    Some maybe.....:peace:

Ok, here goes, my definition of morality is those things which by doing or not doing will enable you to get the most out of life.

So by this definition immorality would be anything that you do or don't do that makes you get less out of life.

Let's take drinking alcohol as an example. In small quantities alcohol is a stimulant and can give you an enjoyable feeling but in large quantities alcohol is a depressant to the point of not remembering things that you did and the next day feeling sick like you have the Flu.

Thus I would say that drinking small quantities of alcohol would be moral but drinking large quantities of alcohol would be immoral.

    So you wanna discuss morality?

This discussion, alongside ethics was posed by Meagain back in 2004 in the Ethics furum (P&R/Ethics) titled "Definitions please". Maybe it's appropriate, maybe not. Worth a read nonetheless, and perhaps a reviving ...

i think the people that enjoy life the most are those that live solely by the morals, rules, etc., that make sense to them, while always being open to altering those rules if new information should come along. i see the OP's point, i think. living by the rules of others, whether you agree with them or not, ends up breaking your spirit, making you less human.

I think it's the most human thing in the world to do as you're told. Seems to be, anyway.
