    Neither rambling nor unclear.

I agree with you completely, and have made the same observation many times myself.

The reality is that the behavior you are describing does not have a whole lot to do with whether it is "atheism versus theism" or "liberal versus conservative". It always revolves around some polarizing "us versus them" topic, it could be anything.

It is simply a convenient mechanism for the fragile egos with a need for power and control. As you said, to establish their "superiority" over some one else, because they have some self esteem problem; without doing this, their world would crumble. These people make me feel sad because you know they will never, ever take the risk of knowing themselves.

Their relationships often tend to be shallow, because they have such a limited ability (or desire) to see behind the shell. The scariest thing to them would be to realize that underneath the superficial differences, there is a oneness- because, that would reveal to them that their carefully constructed superiority is really a house of cards.

I actually find athiests and agnostics some of my most open minded people out there......

I wonder if its because thier thinking isnt limited to some fake religon telling them what to do?

I'm a Christian, but have been taking monthly fellowship with a group of atheists for over a decade. The ones I know are mostly not anti-religious, although some were turned off by being told as children they were going to hell, or 'comforted" for the loss of deceased loved ones by being told it was God's will. These are probably unusual atheists in being seekers who get together regularly to discuss religion, morality and the Bible. I don't notice much difference between them and my friends at the Methodist and Disciples of Christ study groups that I also attend. I get pissed off by people who to easily get pissed off by bad behavior on the part of a few that they then over-generalize to include broad categories of folks they've never met.
