Excuse my ignorance but WTF is a growler?

Had about 5 pints (10 bottles) of heineken and fosters today at various bars and pubs, then about 4 bottles of kronenburg at uncle and aunts house for a family party.

Not most exquisite beers I know but leagues better than most beers people my age drink.

A growler is basically a big glass jug. They're filled with beer from a tap.

I am only going to drink a few of them tonight.

And actually, I feel like shit after my 2nd or 3rd beer these days. But, it's New Year's.

The worst thing about alcohol these days is that it fucks with my sleep.

the growler was filled within hours of me opening, and starting to drink it.

i guess i was thinking that maybe they clean and then re-use the growlers. but maybe not, because once you buy it, it's yours. but maybe it had gotten contaminated somehow before the beer went in it.

it was either the worst hangover of my life or i got food poisoning.

there was shrimp cocktail and bacon wrapped scallops, at room temp for a little while too long maybe. but no one else got sick.

and i had two or three shots of jaeger mixed with something...
and a liberal swig of goldschlagger

i got drunk enough to black out a little

so maybe it was just a hangover.

but i musta puked like 15 times. try to drink water...puke. apple juice...puke. diluted cran-apple.....puke. ....about to die from hunger.....eat two slices of clementine orange.....puke.

drink alka seltzer....woah i feel better kinda!

then i was able to kinda eat dinner later that night.

then i felt ill again and had the shits.

i haven't had a drop of alcohol since, and i'm not drinking for new year's either. i'm good for a while.

A friend of mine is a member of the Beer of the Month club and gave me some of the ones she didn't care for. I know nothing about good beer but here are a couple of the ones that I ended up with:

I tried the cherry chocolate Sam Adams--the chocolate was an aftertaste. Interesting & my first choco/beer experience. Don't know if I would buy a 6 pack but not bad at all.

What happened to you on xmas eve??? I missed the story if you posted it elsewhere...

***Wait, just kidding. The story is in this thread. Hahaha, I'm not very observant.

I feel your pain. That has happened to me before, and I hope I never throw up or black out again!! Throwing up is the worst feeling. Ugh. I'm sure you are feeling better by now. Ever gonna drink again?

    Dude that shits dangerous! :(

I hope your experience re-enforces a more permanent aversion to the shit...I really believe alcohol is the most deleterious drug, for individuals as well as greater society.

    good luck mang :)

Is it just me or does beer from a green or clear bottle taste A LOT better than the brown tint?

It's a placebo effect. It does not really appear to work on me. But I noticed it is trendy to switch from brown to green.

Or better tasting beers are being brewed in greens and clears. =p
Most of the brownies are bitter or wheat biers. Mind you I generally poor my beers into a half lt stein pulled from the freezer.

When I mean it's trendy to switch from brown to green bottles I ment the breweries by the way! Not the consumers. In the Netherlands both Heineken and Grolsch have switched to green bottles and the taste remains to be the same ;)

I dont notice much of a difference in preference. Green bottle beers are good, so are brown.

I looove black and tans. So delicious.

Those have always been in green bottles here as far as I remember. Seems weird to put a pils in a brown bottle
