.....if you want a good compass get a silva north face makes a damn good tent for colder weather camping, but for the best year round affordable tent eureka is a good one....jansport does make a decent external frame pack. not the best but its durable and if you keep stuff in your pack in zip lock bags you should be perfectly fine. as far as cook ware goes....i prepare foods over a wire grill or in a freezer bag in a pot of water.
For tents nothing can possibly rival a Tera nova. best of British and consequently the best on the globe. but i give you that view as a mountaineer
coleman is great, eureka tents also great, but pricey...I have one of each as far as tents...the rest of my gear is all coleman, it's never let me down
as far as clothing ll bean is always solid and they have a guarantee, northface is excellent but expensive, ems brand stuff is always good. gregory makes what i consider the best backpacks.
www.mec.ca it is the best out door store in canada for the serioius outdoorsman, or amateur, i think they might expand to the usa soon, they are enviromentally and socially consious as well
