I haven't really been to any major cities, but I think Pittsburgh is pretty nice. Not downtown, but in the suburbs. My boyfriend and his family live in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, and I love it!
There is no one best place. The things that make a city great to visit often make it a shitty place to live year-round, so you have to travel some to get the best of everything. If I had to pick one city for a base camp and didn't have to consider my current job situation, I'd probably go with Asheville, NC. It's cool, fun, laid back, inexpensive, and has no serious weather problems or earthquake faults. They have never had a hurricane or a tornado. It doesn't have big-city traffic or crime problems, and it has an airport. You can take day trips for all kinds of mountain wilderness experiences, and you can make a road trip to the beach for a long weekend. It has a much better local music scene and big-name concert schedule than you would expect for a city its size, because of its demographics.
Totally. I live about an hour and half south of Pittsburgh in a small town and although there isn't much to do (besides drugs) we have alot of redneck fun haha. Morgantown WV is pretty awesome if you're between 18-24 or if you have alot of health problems because the hospitals are cutting edge. I wouldn't live in San Francisco because I don't like how chilly it is. At least when I was there it was like a beautiful day until I got into SF and it was like 50 out. I would live near Lake Tahoe in an instant. Charleston, SC was beautiful when I was there. I loove the South.
My favorites are Asheville, NC, Sarasota(area), FL and I really loved Santa Cruz, CA and Grass Valley/Nevada City, CA. Sacramento is really a pretty decent place too. San Diego is pretty decent. Tucson is cool. I also actually liked Columbia, SC. I think there are some part of the bay area I would be into. But I'm not super fond of the weather there either. If I lived close to a lot of friends I'd be cool with it and there are lots of cool people out there. The Washington D.C. area is nice, I think. Wouldn't want to live there for long though.
:ack2: Twenty years ago, it was nice. When I have to go there, the only thing I like about it is getting to leave, and even that is hard to do. Now, the hot NC destination is Raleigh, for those who like big cities (200,000+). Asheville is about half that size.
