While I get what you are saying, in the US, libel and slander apply only to the living.
So, to make crap up about Gene Simmons, instead of Chaim Whatshisname, would apply, within reason.

This is part of the balancing act an internationally-accessed site has to perform. Various jurisdictions have sway, some based on where the servers are, some based on the donation mailing address, some by the users' terminals.

As a journalist, who came far too close to a JD, I suggest that a community standard of not lying be in place.

Eta, Shale, I got that you were referring to his lifetime!
But the libel is for the living stands.

I was just throwing that out as an alternative viewpoint...

I agree with the intent of the law. The policing of the law is what concerns me.

"The data could give prosecutors a picture of his followers, their interactions through replies and retweets, and his location at various points,"

Yep, that's how intelligence works. We used it in radio com before the Internet.

It goes back to WWII. We used it, the Nazi's used it - find not only the source but the whole network, then you can target them. That is why radio silence was developed and different ways to transmit info.

Now it is so easy to find who was talking/tweeting to whom and precisely with computer accuracy what time each person talked. And, they can even see where you're at.

Activist ppl should know this and take some counter-measures. Anonymous should dissiminate lessons in how activists can thwart the Blue Meanies in the communication age.

I can accept that intelligence gathering for military purposes is an asset during war. But we're not talking about the enemy and war with respect to the new libel law.

While your current government might be ok with you, what if things went sour? What if some radical managed to acquire power?

How can you be sure that the law you approve of now will not be used to target you or your family, maybe for something as simple as presenting an alternative point of view? Your approval gives the green light to lay the infrastructure.

Your tone seems to be implying that I support this intrusiveness. I was merely reporting on its history and its potential use by the civilian pigs.

I thot my comment "Activist ppl should know this and take some counter-measures" would show what side of the covert ops I support.

people are sheep. and sheep won't care unless their everyday lives are hugely disrupted by it and it makes less of an effort to rebel against a thing than to go along with it. so i'm not holding my breath. maybe in another 500 years.

i have nothing against the proposed law at all, there is a definite legal distinction between slander, liable and defamation, 3 very different legal definitions.
i do dislike the idea of a loss of freedom of speech, im not for gov. intervention in many manners, but all of us could relate to reading crap that is posted by chicken shits hiding behind a computer monitor, and at some point it seemed inevetable that sanctions would be applied.

personally if the site is contacted by the law for the purpose of posts threatning someone, i hope you give them the address to their house, but my question is this, and i ask sincerely as i dont know U.K. law.....many people here are from every corner of the earth, is a ban all they would ask for? can the U.K. law prosecute someone from another country?

i love reading that kind of stuff and if a link is available to the true proposed legislation would you post it, again, im not to lazy to do my own research, i just dont know how to locate this proposition, but i would really like to read and decipher it. thanks.

No, the cameras are all outside because domestic violence *is* societal and cultural. Domestic violence has a next level and it's called domestic war. Can't call it a civil war, but uncivil would be accurate.

I keep thinking of 3 days of darkness .. where were you when the lights went out? lol. It's this awesomely terrifying prophecy where the world gets ripped apart by the birth and unleashing of unholy Hell. My favorite part about it is that it's only 3 days.

<<What we're saying is you're breaking not only this proposed law>>

A proposed law is not a law so they're not breaking anything you are just running wiith it for your own dictator purposes and can't even be honest. Forget hippie. You sound most like a pitician ipso facto.

<<but our rules because personal attacks are banned as is using this website for any illegal activity. If you
don't get that you are banned.>>

It's not illegal. You just decided to intimidate and harass people under color of a law that does not even exist. Trolls do that. Liers do that. Politicians do that. Weak sauce phonies do that.
You are trying to do that.
    :dizzy2:

The idea that someone is so hysterical that they claim to wish to use back log posts to try and sic the law on their own people is also very revealing of the true troll and bully, not to mention small and spiritually kinda stinky person. What an insult to all members, especially those in the uk and i already copied the post to see who legally speaking the real criminal is. And...someone should shoot a copy to anonymous as well ahahaha!

I'm all in favor of this. Trolling comes from nasty people who disrupt good conversations.

Hat off to you, sir. Thank you. Feel free to stop American trolls, as well.
