Hanna,ya that will probly work.i useally plant a cutting by its self in a 5 inch pot ,the roots fill the pot pretty fast, then i just keep chopin it down to increse trunk size.

Lunatic,,ya the (stump) is a silver maple,it was a runner from a bigger maple.it was a good find.lots of work,5 hours of digging then we carryd the 100 pound root ball and tree out of the woods.collection is done right before spring when the tree is dormat and before it has buds. Its doing well now and ive started styling it.Silver maples arnt good for bonsai becouse the leaves are hard to get small and the space between the nodes are too big,but this one works just becouse its a bigger tree.

I'm still here. It would be nice to have a forum for bonsai, but I don't think the demand is that high. It's great seeing others interested also. Perhaps if the moderators see that there are a few of us, this thread will be stickied? .....or is that wishful thinking.

Frog, I don't understand when you say chopped down. You mean chop off the roots or chop off the leaf growth and stems at the top - to get a thicker trunk ?

Also, what do you do for humidity for ficus? I just spray bottle them 2-3 times a day. There's also a cup of water between them.

Thanks, Woodenfrog. I'm wondering if there's a time of year to do that kind of chopping also.

Lunatic, most surely. Frog and I posted our pics in the previous pages before.

    To Post Pictures:
    1) "host" your picture (upload it) onto hipforums in your gallery, or in photobucket or another site
    2) copy/paste URL into reply box here
    3) place the link inbetween "img" like this --->
    [IMG]

I hope that helps. Looking forward to seeing them!

A Ficus can be pruned or choped anny time becouse its a indoor tree and dosent go dormat.alltho not all indoor trees can be choped anny time.but ficus is a verry vigerous grower.its hard to kill them.

I read somewhere, online and offline, that there should be a 'dormant' period of some temperature drop (not drastic) for ficus. The annual cycle of the tree also has its stages. I'm guessing spring is the best time to do major pruning/chopping. It's been awhile since I've done any rigorous searching.

By the way, yay! the little ficus plantlings are doing well and their roots are actually growing out of the holes at the bottom of that bonsai pot. Not good. Going to replant in separate larger training pots soon. Thanks for all the help, Frog. :) The tree seems well too. Lots of new leaf growth and it drinks like a fish!
