What do you expect? The time has now come where people feel that no party represent them anymore, including myself. Society lean to the extremes in these situations; something drastically needs to change in Labour and it should start with getting rid of Gordon Brown. For fucks sake, even Merthyr Tydfil lost its Labour seat after over a century of constant Labour. Keir Hardie, the very first Labour MP, was the representative back in 1900. It was one of those constituencies where if you put a donkey up as a candidate it'll win just by tradition...That's down the shitter now, obviously. Being one of the economic capitals of the world throughout the 19th and early 20th Century, built on the rich resources situated there, it has been a firm supporter of Labour and now it just shows a grim end to a party that the Chartists and Trade Unions fought long and hard to get. It's a complete shabbles and represents none of the masses' beliefs. The workingman's opinions doesn't seem to matter anymore and there's nobody there to voice it. When the government ignores the masses they ALWAYS turn to the extremes. Extremely sad times.
That may be true but it would never have happened. Ken's always been a Labour man, but he was effectively forced to stand as an independent after the party machine deprived him of the candidacy while senior figures from Blair to Blunkett queued up to piss on him. I think he would have been extremely unhappy at being permanently excluded from the party and took the first opportunity to repair relations. Ironically as someone just said on the BBC, the first time round he benefited from Londoners' hatred of the national Labour government, now he's suffered from it.
More like the Evening Standard - the only paid-for London-wide paper - which seems to have been carrying screaming front-page attacks on Ken every day for the last several months. BTW the author of most of those articles, Andrew Gilligan, was anxious to disclaim responsibility for the result on the radio this morning.
The results came really late. Yesterday was a day of tension, waiting to see who would be next London Mayor. Boris Johnson won the position. I wasn't really surprised. Labour have really shot themselves in the foot. The abolition of the ten pence tax rate, the invasion of Iraq, the documents that contained everyone's accounts etc, child credits or general benefit. Conservatives getting back into power would have been unlikely and if Maggie Thatcher is anything to remember, it wasn't a surprise that Labour claimed victory. But now, unlikely as it is, but I think Conservatives are making a comeback. In four years time, we will find out whether Boris Johnson was a good Mayor. Until then, I hope we can atleast cut the guy some slack Additional: Ken took it well. He was like Robert Mugabe, trying to cling to power. Brian Paddick was too arragant, he thought he was perfect and seemed to know it all. Boris seemed to be genuine, wasn't afraid to say it as it is, and I think looking at the Polls, the people have spoken. It isn't Ken we want, it is Boris. In four years time, people will get a chance to vote again. http://www.london.gov.uk/
Johnson really is a poisonous upper class arsehole. So a prick from Eton school is mayor , backed by newspapers owned by old Etonians and a CIty riddled with them. What a shitty joke of a country Britain is. I suppose itll be that Etonian prick Cameron as next PM. Why are British people such submissive gimps? Things havent changed since the 1920s when people would "doff caps" to some toff prick who walked by talking like he had a cock in his mouth Lenin had the right idea - shoot the lot of em and throw em down a mineshaft.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-bans-alcohol-on-buses-and-tube-822462.html Ackshuallly Sal I have in the passed had a drink or two on the tube. But that's not what my real problem is. He's been in office 2(?) days and has already enacted a ban with little consultation. He simply has not had time to have had any consultation! And as this article highlights: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article3890097.ece It would seem that he's not really mthought about how it woul dbe enforced either. plonk
I was one of the people counting the votes the other day. I was scared by the amount of Tory and BNP votes that I saw. I'd never in my life do that job again. I wasn't too surprised, but very dissapointed by the results. I've never voted Tory or Labour yet, and I intend to keep it that way for the foreseeable future. My mate was working on the elections too, she was the lighting engineer for the results.
My mum is usually presiding officer at a polling station, she gave up doing the count when she was still there at 6am on the last general election.
I got lucky, I could've been there a lot longer. I was one of the first to finish. There was too much waiting around for my liking.
