BOYCOTT GOOGLE - Censoring Hippy.com!

ok i just read the whole thread, and skip, i hear what you're sayin bout google and they shouldn't be doin this, but mellow out man. people have their own opinions about google so don't be goin around callin people trolls. but other people, before you go posting your opinions read what skip's been sayin or you'll say somethin stupid and make him mad. but yea google's bein annoyin and shouldn't block us (or other sites) out for speakin their minds.

I was adding thatif you wished for a 'hippy forum' then you are right at the top... If you are looking for a particular site.. you might add 'Hippy.com' or something along those lines... i can see that [and i said] '' i would wonder about this..''

No i would not.. but then i would only want it to be at the top..if i owned that particular website.. If it did not come close to the top given some 'hippy language' lets say.. then i would be none the wiser.. Going on the 'flawed' google.. doing the same search your just not the top of the tree any more...

The finer details about how those search engines work.. no i never even attempted to say i did..

I knew what you were talking about... just if you wished for Hippy.com to be at the top when you typed hippy or hippie.. then fair enough.. but people type in random searches and ultimately i think you don't have it that bad overall..

Why would google do this? Well let's look at what happened in China. Google decided to play ball with the repressive Chinese government and censor any and all sites that the Chinese government doesn't want its people to view. This runs contrary to the spirit of the Internet and such censorship would be frowned upon in any other democratic country.

So it begs the question. Is Google now censoring American Internet sites as well? Especially those with a certain political mindset that the US government doesn't appreciate?

Google has gotten real good at repressing Free Speech!

Here's something interesting. This thread was started on 4/16. As of 4/19 our traffic on hipforums.com is suddenly up 30%!

How did this happen? Well apparently, Google suddenly cut this site loose, as now instead of google returning less than 20,000 pages, google now returns 687,000 pages for hipforums.com!!! We've never had that kind of indexing from them before.

Coincidence? I think not. Google has been monitoring this thread, cause their name is in it, and of course the word "boycott". I knew it would get their attention!

It seems hippy.com is loseing out on revenue.. THAT part is legitimate.. Claiming Google is working in some machluvelian way and censoring these sites akin to some tin pot dictatorship.. is crazy..none of thatis really going on.

Imho Skip has a perfectly reasonable point about the loss of revenue .. i'm not argueing over that so much.. just the way he has gone to town with it [as per usual]..

A few of the links that were recently posted seem to say, on Google's behalf, that this is fairly random, and not a punishment against your site. Could this be true?

 

damn it! i'm running out of friggin search engines! i was boycotting everybody but google after i read that they were the only one who had the balls to stand up to the u.s. gov't and not give over all of their records, and i have been defending them when ever people bring up the fact that they are censoring websites in china because of that. i guess i'll switch to that acconna thing now. i knew google was too good to be true.

 

and you know it is not just that it is one of the most popular sites on hippies is not coming up when you search hippy, that is bad enough, but just that a site called hippy.com is not coming up when you do the seach for hippy. usually even despite popularity when your query is the name of a website that is up on the first page.

 

Skip, you keep bringing this point up. After reading the whole thread and all the links posted within, I still don't understand the link between Google definately censoring China and Google maybe censoring hippy.com just because it doesn't come up early in the google search... or am I still missing something?​

I am reading the links. Granted the order of search pages are coming up different now than what they were, I'll give you that... but still.

I'd be interested to see, Skip, once you do your legal action or whatever action you're doing with google, to see what progresses of it I think many of us would be!

it was thru hipmarket that i found the forums. it's unreal that they're censoring you, skip.

 

I've switched my homepage and my search toolbar to Clusty.com from google. I find it much more useful a search engine and its privacy policy is excellent.

Youll also be interested to know that hippy.com is the top search result on Clusty!

 

hippy.com does show up on search.com when you search "hippy"

Also, they will definitely be hearing from me, and I will not use google, or any search engine powered by google, until this is fixed. I will also pass the word along to others that are heavy internet users, and hopefully others will do the same. There are thousands of us here, and if we tell two people....who tell two people..... you guys get the idea. We can make an impression.

How in the fuck does a wikipedia definition of the word hippy come up long before hippy.com? This is blatant and there should be no way that they could even begin to justify or rationalize all of those other sites with hippy in the title coming before a site where hippy IS the title?
