I breastfed my daughter for four years.(last I heard the international age for weaning is about 6 years(not six months like in North America). I stopped breastfeeding in public when she was about a year. I didn't really care about offending anyone. I personally find it offensive that a mother would be so uneducated about what is good for her child as to stick a bottle in its mouth...I find that offensive. It is sickening to me that a nursing mother whould even have to pause and think about where it is appropriate to FEED her child. My god 'eating' in a restaurant!
I had always heard 3 years, and, in my experience, many people in the US are not aware of this; I have seen people become "odd" and think it is very wrong or sick. It would be nice to see less prejudgment and more inquiry about topics and ways of life that are "different." I believe that all of these issues, that is breast feeding in public and some of the analogies used here in this thread, should be dealt with in a manner that provides education and transition, if any, that are designed with wisdom and respect for all; given this breast feeding in public places is a necessity and should be protected, and those who are worried about this should understand that they will encounter this (as is so) and should devise proper ways of dealing with these "encounters."
there you go again, trying to equate something that is essential for healthy living with something that is totally unrelated and actually serves no purpose except your own gratification.
breasts are a natural part of life, I seriously can't understand why anyone finds it offensive. He's probably the same sort of guy who oogles over porn all night alone at his computer while his wife is fast asleep in his bed... Oh that's right, I forgot porn is okay, but to feed your infant in public isnt... *shakes head*
jim w seems to think that HIS eating is OK in public, but a BABY'S eating is the equavilent of elimiation. (EW EW Icky icky baby germs. Boobies germs EW EW!!!!) Good solution for those who are "offended" by babies breastfeeding in public. Serve the Offended Ones THEIR diinner in the toilet.
As a long time breastfeeder, and one who fed babies in (gasp) public if they wanted it, with about 12 years of breastfeeding, toto, to my name, I must say that I don't think all societies standards are bullshit, but the one about hiding breasts when babies are attached to them, or attempts to move a child eating to a toilet stall is.
