In the fall/early winter of 1968, members of the Grateful Dead came together under "Mickey & the Heat Beats" , and just as quickly the ensemble dissolved. The Hartbeats were: Mickey Hart, Jerry Garcia & Phil Lesh. Phil Lesh was replaced ocassionally by Jefferson Aiplane's Jack Cassady. Apparently, they performed live only 7 times in late 1968. They always performed at the rather small "Matrix" coffehouse in SF.

It wasn't just for fun -- this was during the period they fired Bobby and Pigpen for not being good enough. This didn't last long. Later, Bobby became a much better guitarist.

By the way, I was present in Madison Square Garden for that La Bamba. It was awesome!
