The whole Ivy League thing does seem a bit too snobby.
    So does Oxbridge.

I absolutely hate everything about Oxbridge.
I had the grades but didnt apply.

Its the symbol of *everything* I despise about Britain...

Shame because some of the staff and students * are* very talented.
    Others are just idiots tho'...

Yeah, I wouldn't apply either. But just because I'm not interested in studying in the USA or UK.

So anyways, top universities are all in America. So why is American highschool education so shitty and why does an 18 year old post these kinda questions ? And 18 year olds who haven't seen the periodic table will go to Yale, Berkeley, Stanford, whatever....Where's the sense in that ?

Oh and Bunny, this has nothing to do with you personally, I was just wondering.

    Tops ain't just America.Oxbridge , McGill , Moscow , Sorbonne , Heidelberg etc.Deps on the course.

I think America is about letting people decide careers later.
So early education is broader , less detailed.
And getting 2 sets of degree fees...

By 21/ 22 , in England , kids have finished law school - but might decide they wanna do sthg else - but cant afford the fees...

Obviously these kids don't go to a public school. And are asian, and therefore know things.

i'm not going to defend the american school system extensively because there are flaws (clearly) but it's no worse than any other country. Really, it's not.

My school has an awful science program, but our english program is great. I mean, I'm not stupid (i know you didn't say this, but i feel the need to cover it.) We have one of the highest amounts of AP scholars in the state. And most of us are ready for college. I'm not a great representation of the American school system, i'm ranked like 100 out of my class of 500. I'll barely make it into a university, and the others will end up at a trade school or something.

Well, I didn't say that the American school system is worse than any other country's, but if an 18 year old isn't familiar with the periodic table, then there is a huge problem. But I think you said you wanted to study political science, so I guess chemistry isn't really your thing.

Also, if only kids from private schools can get into good Universities then there really is a big problem in American educational system. Because I believe that GOOD highschool education shouldn't be a thing only for the rich and the privileged. That's why I really like our system. Highschools are public and only kids with bad grades go to public schools because they can't get into a public one. So its not about money, its about one's work and brains.

Yours is certainly broader than ours.We have options - which could be either largely arts or sciences at 14 to 16.Then 16 plus we just learn about 3 subjects.

It depends how you judge it, we had an assembly on monday in which our teachers were defending our schooly against another school in our town, this other town gets consistantly better grades than us, they're like A* - B and we're A* -C/D to get in but what they were saying was that a lot of the best students from this school go to the other one which means their students are exceptional from the start whereas this school takes a wider range of students and gets them a better grade than they were predicted to.

Course they were talking about our school but if you think that all the best minds in america go to Harvard then yes, they do have an advantage over other Unis etc.
    I know, I rock.
14 - 16 you take four options plus the stuff you have to do which varies slightly from school to school (so we have IT and RE as compulsory, not full GCSEs but my friend in another school took IT as an option). Then you get to do either 4 subjects at A level or one a level and one diploma. If you failed your GCSE you can take three BTECs and then take a levels afterwards.

That's what I found out like this week.

harvard is a mixture.Yes some are the best students but others are just dickheads who get in cos thei father went there.Or donated x thousand to the library.

Ivy League staff get huge salaries and the facilities are all gleaming and stuff. Those things dont nec make the uni better than somewhere else.
In some ways its crap vs others.

I don't judge it. Other people do and they make official lists of best universities.

Yes, it seems the Croatian system is the same as Czech system. I definitely agree with You. But neither I'm judging anyone, it's just a cultural difference, that's all. In the US, the good students pay for their education, in Europe, good students do not.

But Britain must have the worst high school system in the developed world.Private high schools are 6 or 8 percent of the population.
And they make up half of all Oxbridge kids..Tossers

But the European universty fees system sounds alot better than the US in terms of sensible cost.

Yup, I know that thing about the British system... Um..

European (or rather Czech, I've never been to Sorbonne or such :D ) universities are very different from the American ones, really, you don't pay anything (except buying the books) and if you're really good student, it's not that difficult to get a scholarship. And there are big differences between public/private universities students... But I don't judge if this system is better or worse, it's just different.

I think some of it depends on what you want to do / the person you are.
If I wanted to be a surgeon , I'd have been laughing.

Investment banker - and , well the "dickhead's network" would close ranks against me...

We just don't have enough good teachers IMO. If we had better teachers we'd have a better education but we don't because of various reasons, people don't get respect in teaching, it's a demanding job in terms of out of class work (e.g. hwk), you need to like children etc. etc.

Unfortunately most /many teachers dont deserve respect.Cos they dont care about the kids doing well.

Our state schools are terribly underfunded- class size , teacher quality etc
Then the admissions systems are just shit ( outright lies)at most Oxbridge colleges.
