Heron, lets cut to the chase. For what reason are YOU waving this "I love the south" banner? Please, I want to know how an issue that is centuries old is even worth bringing up in this thread.
sorry for the harsh response, but it pisses me off when people think that all the south, and mostly Mississippi, is all a racist, republican, baptist hatemongers. Granted, there are racists, there is the KKK, though you never see em, and a bunch of hicks with their rebel flags, but that isnt how it all is. I hate that stereotype. The southern aristocracy was a small small part of southern culture, nothing near the northern one. And like England has ever had a dignified cause, why just the CSA? We are talking about 150 years of miseducation for the justification of what the Union did, to put it in the textbooks and demonize the southerner. And just so you know, George W Bush is not a southerner, nor is his children. He was born in Massachusetts. Just because he grew up in texas doesnt make him southern. Southerners have a long lineage in the south. There is an old saying here, that even if your children are born here they arent southerners, because just because the cat has kittens in the oven, doesnt make them biscuits. Always thought that was funny.
Well, a few pages back, i mentioned that i wouldnt burn the american flag, but would be more likely to fly the Bonnie Blue one. Then someone challenged my southern pride, and this is where we are. It would be like a Scotsman saying he would fly St Andrews before he would fly the Union jack, and someone attacking him for saying it. And it has only been 4 generations, not "centuries". It isnt that old here.
^^^ apologies from my end too. I looked at what you wrote and automatically thought "Stupid old fashioned, nationalist". I was wrong. I'll let you and megara battle it out, because being Australian i really have no business in trying to tell anyone the history of the United States. Yeah....now that i see you're not completely stewing about the issue, I think its ok to be proud of where you're from.
It was just as important in the north? bullshit. It was never as important. Slaves, did however exist. What caused the tensions between the north and south? Whether new states allowed into the union would be allowed to be slave states. Tariffs? The south wanted to export their slave produced wares. I'm sorry, but there really is no escaping slavery. um antebellum is the period BEFORE the war.
you're right about antebellum, my apologies, my head was up my ass. Anyway, i am not a slavery supporter, and said before, if the CSA did come back, i would move, i have read their constitution and do not agree with it all. So i am not defending the Confederate Government, i hate government of any kind, i am defending my place and our history and reputation. But i tire of this badgering. Once again, apologies for my mistake.
I'm not trying to be a jerk or get a fight started again, but this just made me think. Everyone always says, "Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it," and while I halfway agree with this, it makes me kind of wary too. By all of this focus on history, are we just living in the past? While we can learn from past mistakes, today is not then. It is 2006 and things are not the way they were then. What is there that should keep the north and south divided today? Why do we even have states, or countries for that matter? Aren't they all based on the way things were in the past? Today, we have an international economy, where everyone affects everyone else. Why are we still divided by nationality?
Without knowledge of history(real knowledge, not just what is taught in school), we dont have enough information of what we are up against to be able to cause much of an impact today. The troubles of today began at least as far back as biblical times and probably farther. It is like following a road that leads to a certain place. Without knowing at least some of the twists and turns, you will not be able to figure out a good plan for moving forewards. The missing ingredient is the history that is NOT taught. The behind the scenes stuff that is not in the mainstream knowledge is still going on today, just as it was inthe dark ages. Only with slightly more finesse.... We are divided in many ways from the personal realms, to local, to national, to global, due to intellect and ignorance. There is plenty of room for pride in heritage and culture without being bigoted. Boundary lines are an invisible creation of humans, which mean nothing. Created to keep money, different cultures, and religion pigeonholed. A safety feature in an insane, greedy and selfish world...
I personally don't have much of a problem with flag burning. I don't feel that the country represents me as a person. I'm just a number to them and the flag is just a piece of cloth to me.
