(small correction... hitler was on the right. but not the christian right. he was against any organised religion that could take power and influence away from him.)
I agree with you here. I do think teens should be educated about sex, but I wish more programs taught in the public school system would stress abstinece insted of "Here's a condom, go have fun."
No, i think the more appropriate analogy would be "Honey, Don't drive drunk, and if you do, here is my number to call you and pick you up" which would be perfectly reasonable. Telling kids not to have sex is a good idea, but you always have to assume that a number of kids will do it anyway, thus the condoms, i think it's a great idea, and you religous right morons who think abstinence is the answer are just blind to the real world. Peace and Love, Dan
I totally agree that abortion is not to be taken lightly, and usually isn't. I knew this girl at school, however, who had one at the drop of a hat. Then she said, "I'm so glad to have that 'thing' out of me." It seemed like she did not even weigh out her options, it was just automatically the solution to the problem that she consciously brought upon herself, not being a victim of incest, health issues, or rape. Although your mom may not have any regrets/mental problems because of this, many (the majority of women, and even the men involved) do. My aunt would be one example. And the poster you are responding to is not tyring to be God, but he is expressing what he feels is right, which is essentially what free speech is all about, so you should respect that. I am a Christian, and it's not just what my preacher tells me that counts, it's what I read for myself in God's word. It is also a matter of conscience.... Mine tells me abortion is not the right choice.
You are right about the whole driving drunk/phone number thing. Like I said, it wasn't the best analogie. Perhaps, "I odn't want you try to break into the safe, but here's the combination so that you can do it without breaking the darn thing!" would be a better way to put it. Anyway, I think you still get my point. It is perfectly reasonable. I know kids are going to have sex anyway, and if they do, then they should by all means use protection. However, abstinence really is the only way to stay 100% safe until you find your life mate. And if you don't see that by sleeping around with people that you are taking a risk, then you are blind to the reality of what could happen.
To me, going by my beliefs, which I know are not popular around here but anyways...... I'd say that comparing the holocaust to abortion is totally fair. I mean, during the holocaust, millions of living jews died because of Hitler's choice. And right here in America, millions of living embryos die because of a mother's "choice." I'd say the two statements have a whole lot in common.
LoL, yes, I know Stormey Gail is beautiful, isn't she? Sorry, tho, cuz she is taken. Check out these sources. Yes, our tax dollars do fund abortions. Not in all states, but in 17 of them. I am shocked you did not know this! And since there are pro-life people everywhere, then why should they have to fund something they do not agree with with their hard-earned tax dollars? And I'm sure lots of money is poured into pro-life organizations, but not with our tax dollars. At least, not that I am aware of.... can you prove this to me it it's true? http://www.texasallianceforlife.com/Court%20Brief/qanda.htm (lots of good info on this site) Also, many argue about the reasoning behind abortion such as, rape, incest, and health. But did you know that 93% of abortions are just a form of birth control? Only 6% of abortions take place in the instance of a mother or fetus' health, and just 1% in the case of rape or incest. http://www.americasvoices.org/avarc2001/archives2001/WallaceM/WallaceM_061801-4.htm Taxation and Economic Injustice Government power to tax its citizens is being used to fund the killing of Americans. This logically is antithetical to the role of government. Americans opposed to abortion object to having their taxes fund a patently immoral activity. Why does government do it anyway? to numb our consciences? to prove the power of the State? Why should this be? Taking taxes for the purpose of taking the lives of Americans is a wholly illegitimate purpose, and counter to the Government’s obligation to provide for the common defense. If the federal government cannot provide for the common defense, the States must. If neither accepts the obligation….
Well, first of all, when it comes to sex ed, more than 33% of U.S. school district funds go to programs that teach abstinence as the only appropriate method of birth control. Among school districts in the South-where birthrates are significantly higher than the national average-that proportion is 55%. These facts should show that abstinence only doesn't work. Secondly, I don't think any school says 'here's a condom go have fun." To me, it is a parent's duty to teach their children that it is best to wait until they are old enough. Not necessarily until they are married, not everyone believes that is necessary, but 13, 14, 15, and 16 year olds shouldn't be having sex. But it's the parent's job to know what their kid is doing.
Paying for something you don't want is part of the system, hun. My tax dollars are going towards a war I don't want and we don't need. I'm more concerned about those soldiers dying over there and the innocent Iraqis dying than the unborn really. I say protect what we have first, then move on to what we dont. And I have NO PROBLEM accepting others opinions. It is when they feel the need to push their opinions onto others, when they feel that their opinion is so superior to others that it should become outlawed so no one can do it anywhere. That is when I have a problem. An opinion does not change my life. A law regulates it. When someonebody comes into here trying to regulate how I should live my life, then something is wrong. I believe this country should really be a "free" country. The more people like that take away our rights, the farther we are away from the word "Free".
You hit the nail on the head here. Do you think it is because parents are too shy / embarrassed to talk to their kids about sex?
I can see where you are coming from with the whole war thing. If you don't support it, then why should you have to pay for it? But I think that as Americans, we should pay for the war if for no other reason than to support our troops while they're over there. They need their paychecks, and they are fighting on our behalf, whether we want them there or not. And anyone who has a contrasting opinion can appear to be pushing it onto someone else who does not agree. I think it's more a case of just saying what you feel. I think our country can still be free without sacrificing moral standards. I believe it was George Washington who said, "It is impossible for this country to be governed without the Bible." I know not everyone is a Christian, but how would it hurt anyone to follow the law of Moses no matter what your beliefs are? For example, "Thou shalt not kill." Say I hate someone so much that I want them dead. Then does that give me the right to take that person's life away from them? Shouldn't I be free to persue happiness by killing that person? Of course not! If you believe that life begins at conception, as I do, then abortion is murder plain and simple. Not to kill is a Christian principle... so should we get rid of that, too, to make sure church is completely seperate from state? Just a Christian's POV. One more thing... In America it is standard that majority rules. Well, going by the election results on the 2nd, I think it is fair to say that most Americans support the war. But 69% of Americans are against federal funded abortions.
Even still, the majority rules concept is flawed. And no, if you read what people are saying here, they force their opinion. They say this is how it should be done. Not "Well I think..." The religious conservatives here are more like "BABYS SHOULDNT BE KILLED AAAAHHHHHHHHH GOD WILL KILL ALL WHO DISOBAY MY GOD IS THE RULER BOW DOWN TO HIM OR I WILL KILL YOU AHHHH" Anyways, moral standards are also opinions. Your morals might be someone elses sins. I still don't support the war, and more money is being thrown into that than into "killing babies" anyday. Save those alive first. Then save your unborn. Stop ignoring the real topics.
Yes, morals are culture based. I believe that there are ethical absolutes, though. At least in my little world there are. There is a line between good and evil that is pan-cultural, and in my view, it applies everywhere.
I agree. The difference between right and wrong is as clear as day, and I would even say it is to most humans.
Abortion is a "real" topic. Well, it certaintly isn't a fake one, lol. Save those alive first? Well then save the babies. They are just as alive as you and I. And nobody said they would kill you if you didn't bow down to our God. We love God, and we have strong "right wing" opinions, so to speak. And if you haven't noticed, and I'm not trying to call names or anything like that, but the left wingers here tend to be a little forceful with their opinions. Read through the archives. You wont see many "I thinks" from either side. Yes, there is a certain way we feel things should be done, as do you. Wow, imagine that. Millions of different humans with millions of different brains, ideas, and ways of thinking. Wouldn't it be boring around here if everyone thought the same??
Since you missed it the first couple of times, morals are culturally based, what is moral in the USA might be immoral in Micronesia and vice versa.
THank you thank you. I was beginning to wonder if philosophical semantics had fried everyones brain into forgetting things like It is nice to share, and 'dont steal' etc. I really wonder about our odds of coming together as a planet, and have done so for over 20 years. Right now I give us a .0001% chance of avoiding some kind of serious meltdown within the next decade or so. That is up from a year ago. Of course, that is not science, just my pessimistic view of our unsustainable, hatefilled, accelerating consumption and power orgy.
