It's great you'd like to help.

They don't usually let people with no official training do classes, even with counselor aunts...however one thing I did when I was in college was tutoring high school kids. I got paid for it...but if you refused payment I don't think they'd be too upset. It's just that to help with something as complex as reading - or writing - you would really need to study some teaching strategies. I was a math tutor - not as complicated to tutor, cuz it's mostly just breaking concepts into logical, step-by-step pieces. But I also helped one of my daughters who was in Special Ed to improve her reading - a couple hours every night for most of her 4th-grade year while I was unemployed. It really requires a LOT of patience and being positive and encouraging. But she made lots of progress that year.

Looks interesting. I dunno why, but I just happened to pick up two movies from the library this week about gangs and violence. The other one was Goodfellas - another really good movie.

Edit: Make that three movies - I also got Rush, which is an outstanding flick about two undercover narcotics agents.

 

It was a strange storm. I think we would have gotten more snow if it got colder sooner. We got a lot of rain first. It was a wet snow good for snowballs and snowmen. There were a lot of snowmen on campus. I just came in from Grace's afternoon walk and our snow is mostly gone. The remaining snow is slush and the street is just wet.

My sister called from Virginia to tell me she got 16 inches of snow. Better her than me.

 

Their are mentor programs here for all ages. That don't require official training. Lots of fellow citizens do this, ive known a few. All you are doing is give your time for an hour.

'official training' is a load of crap anyways, ive gone though enough life training that no school could educate.

You have to get background checked, and approval from the parent since they will be under 18.

As far as "official training," the most valuable things I've learned were from hard knocks or being self-taught - I've never taken any kind of class in the kinds of computer languages I'm currently using in my job.

Still, because of my daughter's issues I've seen the kinds of techniques special ed teachers use for teaching reading, and I would probably never have thought of some of those on my own.

Of course, im not trying to talk shit on official training, im just say different people for different things.

You gotta work with the right kid, hopefully one who has problems you once had.

 

True that. Somebody who has had to struggle with something is probably better at helping another person with the same problem than a person who never struggled with it.

life coach, it cost money.
therapy, it cost money.

everything cost money, and its bullshit.

help shouldn't have to cost you anything, it should be there, for free, fuck its better than death.

help should always be free. i shouldnt have to go to college and sit in a room paying crazy money for years, from requirements, that have not a damn thing with what im trying to do in help the kid.

this world is backwards in so many ways.

no you can't start a free motivation class here, that is all good and no negativity , filled with truth and and a heater to warm your heart, because my ass ain't in $60,000 or $90,000 in student loans. What you been through don't mean anything, you gotta pay this shit to be counted. ------- yeah...what f, ing, ever.

OR you could come hang out at HF and get all that for free. You just have to filter out a lot of crap, and then there are the trolls...

You might be able to bypass the official training and student loans in some cases, if you can work something out with people. I'm not saying it can't be done - there could be ways and means. It's just, the very least most people expect for you to get started is a track record of some sort to show you can do what you're saying you'll do. If you were strongly motivated, you might find a way.

Oh I know, YOU paid your way. I'm just saying it's not necessary. I benefitted from this site for some time before I decided to start paying.

There's somebody posting on these forums who has a quote from you in their sig - a damn good quote, imho. Tazer, innit? And it seems to me you do a lot of good by just talking.

Not to say you can't or won't do more, of course. You're a dynamic and inspirational kinda guy with a lot of good thoughts and lots of energy. I would be surprised if that energy didn't find an outlet of some kind to make more great things happen. I'm pretty much counting on it.
