I'll go for the laws of men, imperfect as they are. God is an unknown and seldom defined entity or set of processes, certainly not a patriarch concerned with human affairs. But that's a topic for another thread. I don't really mind the Mounties marrying one another -- I think it suits them. Trouble begins when men call their own laws the laws of God. That's when you see women being stoned to death (by men, for having sex) as happened in Somalia last month.
So you'll go for the laws of men, but you don't believe they should ever be revised? Or is that just in the case of homosexuals? Are you a full time, or a part time chauvinist?
Don't stop now, you're on a roll. I'm sure you can find some more words to put in my mouth. "Chauvinism" is defined in my dictionary as "vainglorious or exaggerated patriotism". That's not even close to where I'm at. As for revising the laws of men, the California Supreme Court did just that when they allowed same sex marriage. The people of California in a majority vote reversed the Court's ruling. If you're for same sex marriage, you are in a minority of those people in California who bother to vote. Keep that in mind as you continue you with your name-calling, which you're obviously not finished with yet.
1. Chauvinism is usually when you show extreme and unreasonable partisanship, even hatred, against a group to which you do not belong. Some call it "othering." It's generally a product of intolerance/bigotry/ignorance/fear. 2. Majority support doesn't make something right, or moral. History shows us that. Eg: slavery, separate-but-equal, Jim Crow, disenfranchisement of women, etc ... Tocqueville cautioned democracies against the "tyrrany of the majority." 3. If this has been said already I apologize. But the ballot language for Proposition 8 was confusing. Voting "no" meant voting yes on gay marriage, while voting "yes" meant gay marriage would not be allowed. On Oct. 30, former San Fran mayor Willie Brown urged people at a rally to protect the rights of same-sex couples. Thus, he shouted to the crowd, VOTE YES on Proposition 8! It even confused him. Think of the hundreds of thousands of hurried California voters who, in their daily lives, assume "yes" is a positive and "no" is a negative. This happens a lot on these types of oddly-worded ballot issues. Proposition 8 is being lauded by conservatives as a sign that, despite a November 4 Republican ass-whoopin', "conservative values" (read:intolerance/bigotry/ignorance/fear) continue to thrive in this country. Hogwash. It was a mistake. Proposition 8 will be overturned sooner than later.
May I point out that I have not attacked you, only your political position. I'm sure you are a fine person.
Yeah, MaryJohn does have a bad habit of extropolating the things folks type into the most ridiculous of arguments. Hey! But if you use "weird" fonts, sizes and colors, he'll put you on Ignore and maybe only read one of your posts per day, which will free up a LOT of your forum time. btw, you can, and should, report posts that are insulting or immature name-calling tantrums.
Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but perhaps you looked in the wrong place: That definition is from Merriam-Webster's dictionary. i really don't like those kinds of confusion tactics, either. Anymore, i'm a little gun-shy and will read the wording very carefully to ensure that i vote the way i feel, but sometimes it's almost impossible to make heads or tails of what a yes or no vote actually mean...
Chauvinism is an accurate description of the position dirtydog has taken. There is nothing insulting about it. And so far, there is only one person on my ignore list, and that's you, fyrenza. I don't like to read more of your posts than I need to, although since you caved in and changed your font it's a bit easier.
Nice. I stand corrected. I have never heard the term "chauvinism" used in reference to excessive nationalism/patriotism. We have so many words for that already ... More often we use it to describe prejudice against intercultural groups (sometimes race, but almost exclusively gender: e.g., "My uncle Wesley makes aunt Sally do all the housework because he says it's woman's work. What a chauvinist pig.") And that's how we learn! Teamwork! Thanks Fyrenza!
Like i 'caved in' just for little ole YOU??? ROFLMAO!!! i changed it after another, more courteous member PM'ed me to actually asked me, politely, to change it up.
ROFL!!! Actually, i hadn't heard of it used that way, either ~ that's why i looked it up! It was amazing to find that the 'usual' def was #3! We BOTH learned something new! Come to think of it, NOW i understand what everyone is talking about in the music forums, calling people "Emo Chav's"!
chauvinism, n. [F. chauvinisme, from Nicolas Chauvin of Rochefort, a soldier of the First Republic and Empire, whose demonstrative patriotism and attachment to Napoleon came to be ridiculed by his comrades.] Vainglorious or exaggerated patriotism. Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Fifth edition, G. & C. Merriam Co., Springfield, Massachusetts, 1938. Of course, usage may have changed since 1938. Back then, the word 'gay' meant 'happy'. It doesn't mean that today.
still on that? Jesus, update your dictionary. It's not so much the word "chauvinism" that has changed, but rather "patriotism" that has been narrowed.
Yes, I'm still on that. And don't call me Jesus, I'm not Mexican. Just don't let your boyfriend know about all your Internet chatting, I'm sure he'll be very upset and hide your nail polish or something.
He might even wear your high heels without asking you. By the way, the gays have coined a new word, according to Wikipedia -- "heterosexist". I plead guilty.
That's too bad. Do us a favor though, and stop posting in this thread. You've already defined yourself as an anti-gay bigot, which perhaps explains your inability to have a conversation on this topic without resorting to gay-bashing and personal attacks. If you aren't here for rational discourse, you are wasting everybody's time for the simple pleasure of attacking someone.
