this easter marks my ten year mark of being a vegetarian. i had NEVER liked the taste of meat, but as a kid, when i complained (every night, my mom now tells me), she'd just say "since when?" to avoid having to make me a seperate meal. eventually, i was served a piece of meat that was 99% fat, and i told her that i was done for good, and she relented.

it's almost ten years later, and while she doesn't always make me a seperate meal, they buy me plenty of vegetarian foods and i have plenty of options if i am willing to cook a little.

the taste was not the entire reason i changed, but it was most of it. i think i always wondered why we kept a cat as a pet, but yet ate the body of other animals... the simpson episode about vegetarianism helped me to communicate THAT to my family.

I went veg after my dad died of colon cancer. I began reading more and more about diet and then about the horrors of factory farming. Plus, I don't understand why anyone is still farming animals-enviromentally it makes not sense to feed and water animals just to kill them when we could just eat the grains and water ourselves. My youngest son (now 23) has been a vegetarian for 12 years now. So the transition was pretty easy. I was already reading lables and avoiding most processed foods for him so I just cooked more "side dishes" and less animals.

There are many, many reasons why I am a vegetarian. One that most concerns me is the conditions that workers in the meat packing industry have to put up with. Companies like IBP advertise their job openings in Mexico to encourage illegal immagrants to get jobs at their company, where their chances of injury and death are 3 times higher than any other factory job on the planet. Because most of their workers are illegal immagrants, they don't have any rights so they can't get money for their injuries. It's a viscious cycle that needs to be ended. No one deserves to work their ass of and then get their arm ripped off and only get 1200$ to pay for medical bills, medicine, and recovery. It's disgusting.
