there's plenty of good advice here already so I won't offer any, just my thoughts....a few years back we had some relatives who had a setup as you describe, just camping on their land and in the summer a lot of us would go camp at their place from time to time and it was very magical and fun. lakes and woods, fishing and campfires, hiking etc. Then they decided they needed to build a real house there, and did just that. And now no one wants to go visit there anymore. It just isn't the same as before. I hope this doesn't sound judgmental on the relatives, because I don't mean it that way. It's just what happened. I think your dream sounds great.
Amazing how that happens, something magical and majestic as Mimosa describes loses its magic when the "civilized" element enters the picture, my theory is that's what's wrong with our culture, everything is so built up it no longer has the energy it once had. I guess I can empathize with the Native Americans' attitude that they were robbed of what was once theirs... Seaofgreen, I hope you do follow up and keep this post alive, Man, I'll be checkin' in from time to time, sounds great what you're doing, my tracks aren't too far behind yours...
Hey man i`m pretty broke but I gotta tent and could help maintain, build, and just general work kinda thing. If your interested let me know
a moter home or camper is going to eat you outta house an home with propane costs in the winter.. we lived in our 35 foot fith wheel last winter an it cost us about 25 bucks a week in propane.. an bein the cost of propane now ,,id say yer lookin at a minimum of 35 a week.. not to mention yer pipes must be protected from freezing etc.. you may honestley consider a small cabin with a wood stove for winters..
I agree that the heating or cooling might be more expensive with a RV or camper, but I think I will feel better knowing that I can drive my house off the lot if a hurricane is coming or a flood. Ive always liked the idea of being mobile and yet Ive also liked the idea of living a more rustic life. I think the Rv will allow me to have both. I guess as Ive been thinking this out, what I really really want is to be able to buy several lots at different locations around the country, so I could travel between them. That part of the plan is much more long term, but not totally out of reach. Having a RV or a camper will allow me so much flexibility. If it gets too cold, here in NC, which it does for a few months, I see that as a good time to travel a bit down south, maybe south florida? Anyhow, im still shopping for the right site, but may take a road trip after the holidays and find some warm weather.
I went and looked at what I thought was going to be a good prospect. It was 9.85 acres for 19,995.00. Once I found the land, I discovered that it was 90% swamp land and maybe 1 acre usable land. What a disappointment. Oh well, I had to go check it out or else I wouldnt know. I may end up having to consider smaller lots of 3-5 acres which are more abundant.
I just hope I can get my camp up in Maine before the cost of land goes up too much, seems to be a rise in the cost of land lately due to the fact that more and more people are looking to buy land in more remote areas (it is a finite resource, after all). If you're gonna buy land, the sooner the better. Good luck with that.
I have been busy running down several properties in the area only to be disappointed each time. One lot sounded promising, 9.50 acres, with septic and utilities, partly wooded, rolling landscape, ahhh, sounds nice right? When I got there, it was within a subdivision of about 10 houses, all in the 200K range. Not what I was wanting. Another site, was 4.5 acres, I went and found it and got stuck in mud getting to the lot, which was bad, but surely a sign of remote I thought, so I went on and found the lot, which had a run down mobile home on each side and they were sitting way up on blocks, like 4 or 5 foot of block, and all the land was muddy. I left in search of someth9ing else. It is rather frustrating so far but something will good will come my way if i keep on looking
