Well, this particular election is interesting.

Looks like the stench of corruption is enough to unseat the Centrist liberals. There's a LOT of fearmongering around the Conservatives, keeping in mind that they have their strongest support in areas like Canada's version of Texas (Alberta) and members of their party keep making anti gay, and other tasteless comments. To their credit when found, they're tossed, whereas the Liberals kept their motormouthed folk (Hedy Fry, for example, accused the people of Prince George of burning crosses, which they denied and which turned out to have been made up).

So who to vote for? Unless you're in Quebec (and can therefore vote to leave Canada as a solution) it's really the NDP you're after. The only thing voting NDP can do is split the vote, bringing the Liberals in again.

But I mean, the NDP are a complete disaster. Their hearts are in the right place, but as soon as they get into power they spend like the Bush Administration, and Canada can't afford it.

For those not blessed with a Canadian residence, what does NDP stand for? (I assume it is a political party.)

New Democratic Party - a left leaning coalition of potheads, stoners and union boys. Never been elected federally, were elected to governments in BC and Ontario, in both cases they bankrupted the province, for all intents and purposes.

It sounds like Canada's version of the Green Party.

Isn't a government supposed to be bankrupt? Income exceeding outflow seems like excessive taxation.

Iron, if those gun laws are true, thats pretty interesting. That points to a direct connection between availability of guns and murder rates. But look at a lot of countries that have unarmed citizens, and are victims by their own govt or some other govt. I think it would be really hard to get Americans to give up their guns.

Handguns ARE LEGAL in Canada. All you have to do is get your restricted firearms liscence, which only takes like an extra day when you take a firearms course. My friend has his restricted liscence and he could buy a handgun if he wanted. I'm not into politics so i dont really know what each parties view on guns are. I think the NDP wants to ban all firearms, or atleast the handguns. What a load of shit, like taking away registered handguns from honest, hard working people is gonna stop gangs from getting ahold of guns. Do you think when a gang member wants a gun he goes out and gets his firearms liscence and buys a legally registered gun so when his shoots someone with it then can track him down and arrest him. haha, HELL NO, he buys the biggest badest gun he can thats been illegaly imported from the States. Gangs will always get ahold of guns no matter what you do. I dont know who I'll vote for but I dont think it will be the NDP because of there stupid view on handguns. Pots already pretty cheap and practically legal in Canada anyways, voting for the NDP isnt gonna help much.

RE: Handguns ARE LEGAL in Canada. All you have to do is get your restricted firearms liscence, which only takes like an extra day when you take a firearms course.

You're oversimplifying it. To Americans, "Handguns are legal" means you can fill out a form, they check your crimes and if you're not a FELON, you can put the gun in your glove compartment. This is NOT the case.

It is not "you just take a course". And the restrictions on you with handguns are excessive. You can't keep the weapon together, you must store ammo and gun separate in different lockers, etc. They ask your next of kin and employer if they have a problem with you being strapped, and they can VETO this. And the only reason you can legally have a handgun is if you are a bona fide target shooter. You have to show evidence of membership in a gun club (like, a receipt from paying their year's dues) and that you actually take the gun to competitions.

If your buddy thinks that course cuts it, and he can keep his piece under his pillow, when the door gets kicked down by the cops (he gave up his civil right to search and seizure when he bought the gun, was he AWARE of this?) they'll wanna see BOTH the gun AND the ammo safe, and they'd better NOT be th same one, and sure as hell not close to each other.

RE: My friend has his restricted liscence and he could buy a handgun if he wanted.

He would only be allowed to have his gun disassembled at home, in the trunk of his car en route to the shooting competition, or at the range (where he'd have to put it together). He'd have to do that on a semi-regular basis and show the cops he really is being a bona fide target shooter.

Well, to deal with the gun problem you'd have to deport Jamaican criminals, but that smacks of racism and the Canuckistanis don't want that.

The guns dont come from Jamaica, they come from the U.S and theres just as many whites/packys/indians/chinese/lebs/afghans/iraqis etc; as there are jamaicans smuggling it in.

Why do people think that roving gangs of youths are the only people who commit gun crime?
Most murders are what's called a 'crime of passion'. Basically, it happens unpremeditated, and due to an emotional stressor (i.e. finding your wife in the nude in your bed with the postman) or some mental illness.
Most muder victims knew their killer, something like 90% of them, and you are most likely to be killed by a member of your own family.

It's in these contexts that having a restriction on firearms begins to make sense. Y'see, humans are hot heads by nature, and giving them a tool that kills with the click of a button only encourages these killings...

But, shotguns should never be banned, they are the only real weapon that you can use to protect your house, cause you don't even need to pull the trigger, the little cha-click is enough to stop any thief/rapist/escaped tax evader in their tracks...
