It really is because then the gay cat couples could adopt the orphaned feral kittens! :sunny:

This evening is the first time that Baby Kitty has wanted to act like a cat and explore my room. Normally when she is finished eating she scurries back into the carrier. Tonight, in the middle of eating, she decided to roam around and explore the bedroom. She is very timid still. I've left her alone in the bedroom for about two hours now, with the door closed. I'm in here calling her but she hasn't come out yet. I imagine if I looked under the bed, I'd find her there.

I found the hidden present Baby Kitty left me...stinking up my whole room...behind the waste basket on some extra plastic bags. Bless her heart she tried to not go straight on the carpet.

Gotta teach her to use this litter box. I took one of her poops and put it in the box. Maybe...

    She's so precious.

    This was yesterday.

I'll get some better pics with the real camera soon.

Oh, yeah...I got a good look today and Baby Kitty's mom is definitely very pregnant with a few new ones.

    Thanks, Ty :)

Baby Kitty surprised me last night at bedtime. I was resolved to thinking she would stay under the bed for the night but I really would rather she sleep in her carrier because my daughter brings the pit puppy to my bed when she leaves for work in the morning.

Anyway, as I was getting ready to turn off the lamp and lay down in the bed, I looked over at the cat carrier and Baby Kitty was bedded down in it! All I had to do was put her cover towel over her and latch the door! I was so proud of her!

Today, I put her litter box near where she'd pooped on the bags yesterday and came home to find that she had pooped in the litter box! Again, I'm so proud of her!

She's still skittish and I can't get her out from under the bed. When I'm here, she comes out to eat and if I move from the desk chair she scurries back under the bed. I know she is enjoying her freedom and the safety of being under the big bed.

awww...I'm thinking her illness could have even been one of those strange meant things...to "get y'all together". I think she not only is, but will be, a very special little fur companion.

Yeah, I thought that when she got that litter box close, and you put the poop in there, she would figure it out poste-haste. It is the very unusual (usually very in-bred) cat that doesn't quickly understand that. They LOVE litter box digging. :p

Went to do my laundry this morning and there was a small 'possum on the balcony. I suppose it is the same one I fotografed last December - it comes up here to eat the cat food that the neighbors leave out for the strays that live in the complex. (Miami Beach has a bunch of stray cats).

Anyhow, last month I saw a 'possum of this size run over in the street and figured it was the same one, but apparently it was a relative. Unless they all know about the cat food on the balcony.

    BTW, I just love this:

Baby Kitty continues to improve. I got her to look me in the eyes for a good while tonight and I see that she's getting that old spark of good health back in them.

It won't be long until I take her to a mobile unit for her spaying.

I'm so happy with Baby Kitty right now!

She has been hiding from me for weeks. She comes out to eat and potty and watches me so I don't try to "get her". When she is finished, she goes back under the bed. I have felt like a bit of a failure in the taming department.

I remember she does not like the fan on the a/c unit. When she was sick and I was holding her, she would be kind of scared of it.

Tonight, the bedroom is warm and stale so I turned it on and was talking to her about it and apologizing even though she was under the bed as usual.

When I sat down in the desk chair she started meowing loudly, which she hasn't done at all, and she came halfway out from under the bed. She smelled my hand, which was full of dog and other cat odor. She let me scratch her on top of the head! Then she went back under the bed, acting like she was afraid I might try to pick her up.

I think this may be a break through! I hope it is. I hope it's not a fluke. I haven't wanted to push it with her. I haven't wanted to frighten her. Maybe she is going to come around after all.

I guess I may start sitting on the floor a little bit to see if she wants to come out. I've laid on the floor, lots, talking to her under the bed and she didn't budge so I gave that up.

It's difficult to know how much is too much.

When I first tamed a pair of feral carolina island cats I lured them to me with a bowl of bait shrimp placed a little closer to me on the deck each night until the bowl was in my lap and they got used to coming into my lap on their own to eat before I tried to handle them.

I think I'm going to do that, Ranger. She really enjoys being loved on but she's gotten scared again.

    She's confused. I think.

When she was near death she couldn't fight it and she enjoyed it and it helped to heal her.

When she got well, I think she was embarrassed and confused that she had compromised her principals and let a human hold her.

All I know is that she is not going to spend the remainder of her life under my bed...

A nicely baited luring...I like it, Ranger! Thanks! :grouphug:

Baby Kitty has decided to come out of my room and to start exploring the rest of the house and getting to know the other cats. :) I'm so pleased.

I foster cats for a rescue here in Ireland. I have fostered many feral kittens but not adults cats. The only thing that I find works is lots of time and lots of patience. I currently have a kitten that lives under my stairs, she comes out to eat and poo and that's about it. I sit beside her and read out loud so she can get used to my voice, I try and tempt her out with dangly toys on sticks, she is having none of it for now but I know its only a matter of time, kittens can't resist play! When she does come out I just ignore her so she sees I am no threat. I haven't had a feral defeat me yet so fingers crossed she will be the same!
Its not easy and its most definitely not quick but it is so worth it in the end when they find their forever home and you know its because of the time and care you put in.

    Thank you, Spectacles :)

Hi, Twee :seeya: "Baby Kitty" was about 7 months old and feral when I had to take her in because she was near death out in the yard.

She and Mabon have started doing the little nose kiss thing and kind of playing chase. She still seems more afraid of me than the other cats or the Pit Bull, lol.

Baby Kitty and Mabon are both calico and they are of similar size, although Mabon is 3 years older and is a dilute calico while Baby Kitty is not dilute.

She's also been out around Trouble and Skooter. So far, no one has attacked her or scared her.

All these "characters" have pics in my album. I'm hoping to get some good ones of Baby Kitty now that she's out from under the bed.

My porch-cat mama had kittens on my porch 2 1/2 weeks ago.

    4 little fuzzy babies.

I've been giving mama fresh food and water so she doesn't have to stray far from her babes.

I was a little worried about 2 of them. Their eyes were not opening like the others' and had a little bit of crrust, but they are open now.

    That sounds sweet, Star...

What will you do with the kittens now?
