On a different note though, I used to have a toyota celica. I beat the living (or non living) shit out of this car, I just couldn't kill it. It never had oil, or brakes, and I would fly at about a buck ten everywhere I went. I had to use the E-brake to slow down and stop. I used to go off roading in it through shit I wouldn't take my 4x4 through. I used to jump it off the state strret jump, and get enough air that I could've cleared another car......

I try not to do this in the van though:)

also I forgot volvos!!!!!!!!! I've had a couple volvo's my first one was about 6k i think I had it for a year and a half and it had 220,000 miles on it when I traded it in-still ran perfectly. The only problem is once they break down they are expensive to fix. Also, I would get one prior to when ford bought the company they seem less reliable now. But yeah I love older volvos. I miss mine we used to call him mr bobo because i got really drunk one night in high school and said i drive a bobo

Unless you're easy on the clutch ($$$$) stay w/the automatic.

Are you sure? Replacing an automatic transmission is a whole lot more expensive than replacing a clutch and automatic transmissions have higher failure rates. I would look for a manual transmission, on a car that has been well maintained. If the car is really well taken care of, then the previous owner probably wasn't abusing the engine as well.

Of course, get the car checked out by a mechanic before buying it.

    Yep.
I've seen more problems with clutches/gearboxes than automatics in small FWD cars.

Clutch assemblies (parts only) normally start at $500USD - shop price, not list.

Ever try to find a good used gearbox in a junk yard?

You're more likely to buy a Chevy and have it fall apart within a few years than have a Honda that gets stolen.

Smart cars are only two grand?! Damn, thats so cheap for a new car. Those things are great in small or dense cities, but I live in the largest US city land wise, and you would probably die here in that car.. I didnt know they were over here at all, just thought they were in europe.

I protest. There is nothing in this thread about Rik Ocasek or The Cars.

I've owned several Hondas, they freakin' rock. We have a 2004 Civic now. And there are always tons of used models available.

I agree go with an automatic for sure the one manual I had was fun as hell but after needing two new transmission in a year on a two year old 30k dollar car youch never again. I traded that puppy in for the same make/model but an automatic and never had one transmission problem...just lots of new brakes.

    A car operator the shops like...*L* ^ ^ ^

    Also a lucky one.
Volvos are money pits...like jags on a lesser scale.

Chances are if you had these installed you wouldn't be in the biz of getting brakes renewed as often.
    They offer excellent performance/total cost.
I've used them for quite some Time (personal/commercial apps)...
