I love pie. And I refuse to use store bought crust but making your own crust is a pain in the ass and I'm lazy so I rarely make them. I want to try making a cherry pie.
Meliai, I was just thinking of cherry pie......YUM! I have decided...if I am going to travel to buy pies......I am going to buy at least 4 of them. I better start clearing out my fridge to store them in...and their pies are $15.00 each....OUCH! .....and I am going to try their cherry and strawberry/rhubarb one.......am not sure if I should try peach and then only one blueberry yet or two blueberry ones and no peach yet.... I will try their pumpkin in September.....I don't plan on going there too often....twice per year may be ok.
A few years ago I met someone with a sour cherry tree in their yard and they NEVER EVER USED THEM!?! So I went over and picked every last cherry and we made sour cherry pies and turnovers and tarts and pancakes. I forgot about those. Sour cherry pie is very good!
Strange that Australia and America were both colonies of England but there was dichotomy when it came to pies. America went for the apple pie; Australia went for the meat pie.
Moonglow, you mentioned "Edwards" frozen pies. Is this the "Edwards" grocery store chain in New England? Key Lime and Lemon Chiffon are big down here but I agree with you, blueberry is the tops.
Yes, Edwards frozen pies that are in all of the grocery stores around here in the frozen section....in new York......Do you have them where you are? i really do not know where Edwards pies originated from or where the home base is for those...but they are sold here, anyway.
Sheperds Pie...made with meat and potatoes.......We have those here, too..... I like warm apple pie with cheddar cheese on top or vanilla ice cream.......I like my apple pie to be real cinnamony.....lol
Moonglow, I don't think that they have a well developed sense of pie in the south. Certainly no Edwards down here.
Moonglow, I'll let you know if I'm coming to NYC this year, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, to see the tree lighting and eat some good pie.
i've never really been big on pies myself. sugar doesn't belong in most things that aren't chocklet. i think pumpkin was the only pie i could really stand growing up. fruit is for eating the way it comes from nature. not baked with a bunch of sweetening crap added to it. maybe slice it up and poor a little milk over it. something like that.
Cocoa comes from nature and is a lovely spice on its own without "a bunch of sweetening crap in it", so I don't really see the logic there.
There is a cocoa shortage afoot. Something about the growing areas in E. Africa. This is a true humanitarian crisis, life is not possible without chocolate.
i sprinkle unsweeted cocoa on top of ice cream to kill some of the excessive sweetness. grand mariner truffles are rolled in it. what is your point?
I'm more savory guy but love a good pie. We have an outstanding pie shop in town, the blueberry is to die for, and there is a bar/restaurant that is famous for Latin dancing nights and pumpkin pies (in season). On pumpkin pie, mine has become an extended family tradition. I make it no secret, it is the recipe on the can of Libby's pumpkin (with the spices upped a bit and less sugar).
