Its wierd and refreshing to see Heron making reasonable and helpful posts on a topic. Celtic artwork really found its glory days after the conversions to Christianity. So much so, I associate the very site of a braided circle with Christian traditions alone. Just a reminder, you can find a beautiful example of Celtic Art and Design in the Celtic Cross.. notice the Sun is behind the Cross eh. Yep.
"celtic" not work is more Anglos-Saxon, and before that Scythian. It was the Angle Monks in Ireland that introduced the knotwork in their illuminations. The Picts did have a knotty pattern, similar to the older germanic ones, but is a obviously different from the tradional "celtic" knotwork. As to crosses, the "Celtic Cross" is a rehash of an older sun symbol, with even arms, not the longer on the bottom like a Jesus cross. It symbolized the sun, and the bridges to the otherworlds, they just did a little tinkering to make it fit to hang a Christ on. And Erasmus, its easy for you to take what I say here more serious, you have no dogmatic attachments to the subject. Its only matters of the bible where you get so judgmental and closed minded. Its refreshing to see you more seemingly intellegent, and not some raging christian with a few facts memorized.
btw.. It IS a Christian Cross. The Creators were quite certain of that. Like I said - Note that the Sun is behind the Cross. No mistake there.
The circle is often said to be the universe, and the cross the fourfold division into the elements. It's also a wheel which turns on the cosmic axis. It also represents the four seasons etc.
Erasmus, sorry, yer wrong. Leave this department to me ok? Go back to a bible thread. Oh, Bill, just for future knowing, there wasnt four seasons to the Celtic world, they only reckoned two. Summer and Winter.
Oh, sorry, we were talking about celtic crosses earlier, my bad, but now ya know, and knowing is half the battle
So where did the Celtic Cross that we know of today that is in much modern art(and on a black sabbath hoodie I own) come from? Is it the original design or what?
The Cross part is because Christian Artists wanted to make a Cross which would symbolize the CROSS the Christ Died on. Its a Cross. Cant figure out why this is hard to understand? You might have noticed it IN and AROUND Christian Churches. I really dont care if you are talking about earlier shit that also looked like a cross-shape - the one we are talking about is a Christian Cross. Seriously. 'Knock Knock on the NOggin people!
We were speaking of the celtic cross, the crossed circle, which I then pointed out is a symbol which occurs in many cultures, and I then gave some hint as to it's possible meaning. Sorry if this confuses you.
They also put the Green Man all over their churches, dont tell me that was really Jesus in a foliate costume.
haha, yeah. I heard that they found "celtic crosses" on rocks dating back thousands of years in western europe. It's a very old symbol that was adopted by christians. Of course, they already had a cross but I mean they adopted the celtic form and changed the meaning to a christian one.
That is what Erasmus is having trouble digesting, I mean everyone knows that Christianity is a completly original religion, never taking from others at all. That is perfectly apparent in their holidays and customs. As far as cross symbols go, i would have prefered that the hung him, i think a noose makes a better necklace anyway, and there would be no confusion with any previous (apparently completly unrelated) pagan symbols.
But Christians werent the original people to have a cross shape as their symbolism(as they would believe). Look at the Ankh, it looks just like a cross... And that predates christianity by thousands of years. Christian culture is like a recipe requiring a bunch of cultures used to cook a soup labeled "Christianity the one and only original soup".
I see Christians more like the invading alien species in "Independence Day". They rape(Catholic priests) pillage (Crusades), plunder (Inquisition) and leave destruction in their wake. And they do it all out of love for their fellow human and the need to save their souls. Just once, I'd like to hear King George admit that he invaded a country because Buddha told him to. Or light a menorah and eat some latkes. Or face Mecca when he prays. Or publicly proclaim that he made sweet love to Laura in Rhiannon's name. I'm not intolerant of Christians. I'm intolerant of Christians who are intolerant of everything NOT Christian. Yeah, this means you.
Look people.. when we say Celtic Cross we are talking about the Christian Cross Symbol as seen done in Celtic Cultures. I dont know exactly where everyone has gotten their wires 'crossed' on this but that is pretty clearly what Im talking about. Im pretty sure Circles and squares and crosses were used for a long time in all kinds of art work. Great. I suspect Im probably one of the few people here who actually see's things like Pict artwork on stones around town. (well I dont live there anymore but you get me) While its probably true that most 'Celts' are now soft Christians, its also true that very few are Pagans anymore. This is because they were cool folks that liked to work hard and play hard and recognised a good thing when they saw it. i.e. Christianity. Then they just reformed it from time to time. ps. Zoomie, you really suck balls as a 'Troll'. Please do better next time. Thanks
